See story on right. Mayor Newman Won't Con test Liberal Leadership Mayor Des Newman told the Free Press last Monday that he won't contest the leadership of the Ontario Lib- eral Party. Mayor Newman bas had several requests over the last six weeks to become involved in the campaign, but feels that if Robert Nixon was not involved bis position would possibly be differerit. It seems to him that the party owes Mr. Nixon their election because of his service to the party tbrough lean years over' tbe past six or seven years. The Mayor feels that, the Liberals need a healthy re- organization and hopes that if Nixon is re-elected he will make thisre-organization bis priority. .When asked his reasons for considering the leadership, Mayor Newman said that his interest was in providing leg- islation to strengthen the po- sition of cities and towns in the province and feels that if this isn't doue, the trend wilI go to bureaucracy and hence, would have tried to force more authority for mu- nicipalities. Approxiniately five hund- red people attended to wit-i ness this histo ric gathering1 of the 31 members of the Regional Council. Bruce Anderson piped in the platform group; and Fred Ballard gave the Vice Regal Slute. The Honourable John White called the meeting to order and introduced the Lie- tenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable W. Ross Mac- Donald. The Invocation was given by Monsignor Paul Dwyer and the Reverand Robert Brawn. The Honourable W. Ross MacDonald administered the Oath of Allegiance to Region- ai Chairman Walter Beath, who declared his qualification and introduced the members of council and acting clerk William G. Manning. The members of council are: J. Anderson, Mayor G. Ashe, K. Matheson, A. Robertson, (Pickering); Mayor C. Mason, M. Reid, (Ajax); G. Emm, J. Goodwin, Mayor D. New- man (Whitby); J. Aker, G. AÂttersl-ey, R. Bestwick, M. Breaugh, A. Dewar, J. How- den, A. Pilkey, Mayor J. Pot- ticary, K. Ross, M. Shaw, C. Thomas (Oshawa); 1. Hob- bs, K. LyalI, Mayor G. Rick- ard, B. Tink (Newcastle); W. Ballinger, Mayor C. Puterbo- ugh (Uxbridge); Mayor L Malcolm, R. Rose (Scugog); Mayor A. McPhaiî, K. Rynard (Brock), and Walter Beath Chairman. The Honourable John Wh- ite presented Walter Beath with a framed and autograph- ed copy of Legisiative Bill 162 which created the Region- ai Municipality of- Durham. The Council passed two by-Iaws: (1) to provide for interim rules of proced- ure; (2) to adopt a corpor- ate seal. The by-laws were passed unanimously without discussion. A motion to, adjourn was entertained, and the ceremon- ies were wrapped up courtesy of The General Motors Cho- rus. Roberts Collegiate, lawyer Peter Fahlis (left) and Don Hill, Vice-Pres. of the Business Men's Assoc., were demonstrat- ing OUTSIDE. The pair, pictured above, were part of a delegation that came 140 miles from the town of Durham (about 30 miles south of Owen Sound) to voice their protest against the region being called "Durham". See story. N4EARLY AN EMBA RASSI NG SITrUATION 'he Inaugural Meeting of the Council of the Regional Municipality of Durham was held Monday nigbt at G.L. Roberts Collegiate in Oshawa with about five hundred "in- vitation only" spectators. BUT few realized bow close this historic occasion came to becoming a VERY embarrassing situation. While ail inside were "eyes glued to the stage" following the proceedings, the police were active at hushing a demn- onstration OUTSIDE. A delega tion from the town of Durham (about 30 miles south of Owen Sound) had travelled to the Collegiate to demonstrate against their na- me being used for the nïew region. Durham lawyer. Peter Fallis, was protesting inflinge- ment of copyright 'of the name "Durham" claiming th- at under the Business Cor- porations Act two incorpor- ated companies can't have the same name. He a!so pointed out that the town of Durham has had the name for 101 years and gave the FREE PRESS an affadavit with a copy of the original Act of the Province of Ont- ario incorporating the Town of Durham in 1872. Mix Fallis also claimed that the name had been chosen for the region without, any notice given- to the Town of Durham.
