WHITBY FREE PRESS, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1973, PAGE 9 Table TennIs A ssocia tion Elect Officers * WMBA AWA'RDS DAY Whitby's Heydenshore Pavilion was packed last Sunday as the Whitby Minor Baseball Association officially brought the 1973 season to a close with its fifth annual Awards Day. The wind-up to a highly successful season which began back on June 2nd which was officially proclaimed Minor Baseball Day in the Town of Whitby by the Whitby Council. Peel Park was jammed with players and parents as Whitby's Police Chief played what has become a tradition al role in throwing the ceremonial "first pitch". Chief Wm. Pilkington has performed the honours each year since the W.M.B.A. began in 1969. The Awards Day has been held each year to bring the season to a close and to honour especially those who have won championships and to recognize the many people, clubs and business conceins in the community who ielp make the W.M.B.A. programme possible. This year nearly 600 boys played on thirty six clubs, thirty one of these in Tee-Ball, Tyke, Pee-Wee and Bantam House leagues and five clubs representing Whitby in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Assoc. The Knights of Columbus club won the E.O.B.A. Tyke "A" crown and went on to become Ontario Tyke "A" Champions defeating Leaming- ton for the title to repeat the performance of the 1970 edition of the club which also won Ontario honours. The afternoon activity got underway when W.M.B.A. Pres. Gordon Hanna welcomed the large gathering of play- ers and parents by commenting on the success of the season noting particularily the calibre of play and the fine sports- manship which was displayed throughout the season. The Pres. extended the thanks of the organization to the many people and organizations who helped the assoc. in a variety of ways to make the ambitious programme possible, and noted that in five short years the W.M.B.A. had become known as one of the most successful and responsible sporting organizations of the community. Renowned for their pub- lic appearances, and, eharit - able endeavours, the group are holding a special 'begin- ners' night, Saturday, Oct. 27th. The event gets underway at about 8:00 p.m. in the Oddfellow's Hall, Bagot Stre- eet. Brooklin. Anyone inter- ested in learning how to 'cut corners' in a square dance are invited to attend with no admission charge for this Be-. ginner's Night. I The Oshawa and District Table Tennis Association he- Id their election of officers for the current season at a general meeting recently. The Association will be headed up by Bruce Field as president with Bruno Kearn serving as vice-president. The treasurer elected was larry Metcalf with Liz Vanderstoop serving as secretary for the ensuing year. Six directors also elected are: Kurt Pickenbroek, Peter Syperek, Breik Tryer, Don Tandy, Phillip Da Cambra and Steve Rosnick. The meeting was held re- cently at the General Sikorski Polish Veteran's Association Hall, Steven's Road, Oshawa. Club activities are held Monday, Wednesday and Fr1- day evenings with seven com- petition tables available for use.
