t I BIRD'S b. EYE VIEW A Siioeki"ng *Expoeriono. lhe>' tell me an electrie shockç is good for your health so 1 arn mental!>' preparing myseif for what must be the healthiest time of the year for me.' As 1 gaze out the window and watch the* rain fali it dawns on me that the main wiii soon turn to snow and 1 shouid get at the job of putting out my Christmas lights before the snow hits. 0f course i will meditate on the merits 9f put- ing my iights out early until finali>' 1 bave meditated myseif right into the snow season. One year 1 meditated right into Spring before 1 decided it was time to put up the lights and then 1 was quite surprised to discover Christmas had corne and gone. Surprised but not disappointed. 1 hope 1 make out better with the lights and decorations this year than Iast year's disaster. 1 began to suspect things wouid not go right Iast year when 1 took the wreath for the front door out of the box aiQd it crumbied in pieces and fel in a mess>' heap on the floor. Because I'm somewhat of a home fix-it nut 1 decided it wouldn't be much of a job to put it together again. Ont of my caustic friends said it had nothingto do with the challenge of fix-it but rather was related to my Scottish ancestry with the wallet. One thing about my friends, they* sure don't pull punches. Well even after a fi«x-it attempt that wreath looked like a cedar bush that had been struck with the piague so I scrapped the wreath and got to the business of the iights. I was sure I biad packed themn away careufil>' last >'ear but as 1 remember it was a heavy season for Christmas spirit 50 I1 could be mistaken about that. After sorne am ount of blessing and a littie spirited tug- ging i managed to get ail the strings of ligbts on separate areas of the living roomn floor and plugged'in one string to see bow man>' bulbs it would need. Nothing happened. Then 1 noticed it was one- of those fool strings that if one bulb goes out the whoie set up dies. 1 checked ever>' bulb to, nake sure it was tigbt in the socket and still nothing. ¶hen I discovered that one bulb was broken away from it's metal socket and while discovering this the bulb came apart in m>' hand giving me rny first healtby shock of the season. I final!>' wound up having to replace four bulbs on the set and after almost an hour's work 1 had onl>' one set of lights working. The next set wasn't as bad because if one bulb went out the rest sta>'ed on. As 1 walked across the room to get some more bulbs I stepped on the string with my sock foot and after the bulb broke I received my second littie jab of healthiness. If 1 get an>' healthier 1 would be able to stick the bulbs in my mouth and touch themn with my tongue to test thern out. A further complication was that some nut had put hor- rible green bulbs in ail the outdoor strings and the>' looked like St. Patrick's day. I was inforrned the nut was me so i shut up and peddled ni> buns to the hardware store to get a new suppiy of bulbs. While 1 was there I wanted to bu>' some bulbs for a couple of the indoor sets of lights and wben 1 showed the clerk the old bulbs he shook bis head and replied that he hadn't seen a set like that for y'ears. 13> taking ail the bulbs frorn one string for the other string 1 was able to salvage one indoor string and 1 was read>' to put up the outdoor lights. At this poinit iarn preparing myseif for another shocking experience because it always rains when 1 try to put up outdoor lights. 1 think it's some kind of tradition in Wbitby. Tir> it y'ourself, just walk out the door with those lights and down it cornes. Éý Kodak RONSON tpRKER BELL B HOWELL argus - E -0 iha eZ F Coe#8xiiîy 356 DEAN AVE. So with the ramn coming down and a ver>' unsteady step-ladder to contend with I started hanging the lights on the front lawn tree. I knew it would be a tough job because even after repairs my light sets always look like the 'before'ý pictures of bad light 'sets the' fire department, shows you around Christmas time. Mine didn't look like the 'after' picture even when the>' were new. Mind >ou 1 bought them from the Navy surplus store so maybe the Navy isn't building them like the>' used to. The whole business was ver>' frustrating because ail the lights wound up lopsided on the tree and the indoor ones neyer blinked in unison and some neyer blinked at al ...the>' just sparked. 1 casually mrentioned to a friend how I got lit up at Christmas and he said 1 shouldn't drink so much.
