There was a tire on the third floor in one of the girl's rooms. For those of yuu who have just moved into town, the Ladies College used to be a castie and it is one of Whitby's most historie buildings and a lot of people in town would flot like to see the building burned to the ground. We're not sure if the council cares or not. Free Press Photo Santa Swamped Hundreds of smail child- ren and their parents stream- ed into the Whitby Mal, Saturday morning to greet Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus who arrivedl there Saturday morning. Sbortly after their arrivai, a crowd of children milled around the throne wbere San- ta and Mrs. Claus were sit.- ting. No accurate count could be made but Santa, who is an expert in sucb things, estimated at least 500 children sat on bis knee and put ini their requests during the morning hours. Throughout the day a ne- ver ending stream of child- rn met the distinguished parof special guests. Santa Claus stated that he had neyer found a happier group of cbildren and paid high tribute to their parents. "The children in Whitby are simply lovely and are so welI mannered," he said. One small child, a visitor to the town, had travelled to Whitby from Wasaga Beach to visit relatives:' "This littie girl was a darling," Santa said. Although ail shops bave not decided on the same length of hours, with a few deciding to stay open to greater Iength, a majority pattern was established. The majority of the stores will be open Friday, Dec. 7th until 9:00 p.m. On December l3th and l4th the stores will also remain open M il 9: 300p .rn. Thiey still don't bave their fire hydrant and we wonder how much longer council will go on playing games. Our Fire Department bas one of the best records in Canada su when tbey ask for equipment you would think tbe council would listen but in this instance they didn't. Saturday's fire could have been a disaster but it wasn't. But, by baving tu figit a fire su far away from the nearest hydrant the department used almost every hose available from ail Whitby stations. Hoses had to be run for 300 feet and that tied up ail the buse at une fire. Wbat if there had been another serious fire elsewhere at the same time?? Our Fire Department bas proven them- selves and their new ladder truck now it's time for the council to back them up.
