This week, Jiru Hanley, Registrar for the W.M.B.A. announiced that registration for the 1974 season wiIl take place on Saturday, April 2Oth and Saturday April 27th froîn 9 a.m. until 12 noon in four different areas of the town. As in previous years, boys wili be able to sign up for Tee-BaIl and Basebaîl in Brooklin, Aîmonds, Garrard Rd. and the "old town" at exact locations to be announced later. Registration fees for the scason are $4.00 per boy and a maximum of $ 10.00 per fâmily. Members of one famnily must ail register at the samne lime to take advantage of the special farniîy rate. The W.M.B.A. operates a Tee-BaIli league for boys six to eight. House Leagues for boys in Tyke, Pee-Wee and Bantamn levels and aiso operates cluibs representing Whitby in the Eastern Ontario Basebali Assoc. in the E.O. B.A. Tyke, Pee-Wee, Bantarn, Midget and Junior Series. In 1973, approximnately 600 boys were registered with the assoc. pîaying on 36 clubs. The season officiaily gels underway on "Minor Basebaîl Day in Whitby" which will be on Sat. May 25th and wiil feature a traditional trade of the association's players throtigh dte downtown area and a "first bail ceremnony" aI Peel Park. Opening Day starîs the season for Hotise League clubs who play throughout the sumrner, with playoffs in late August and earîy Sept. to declare champions. The Tee-Bail programme inlroduced by the W.M.B.A. in 1972 becamie an instant success with six clubs in the initial season and eight in 1973. To enrol in the Tee-Bail section a boy must be six years by June 3Oîh. In this modified version- of the game the batter hits the baIl] off a stationary tee rather than a bail thrown by a pitcher and in this way learns many of the basic fundamcntals of basebaîl whiîe developi.ng some of the. skills and co- ordination necessary to, play regû*lar basebaîll when he reuches th~e age of eighî.", Lasltî season, Ihere were ten clubs in the W.M.B.A. Tyke Ilouse League, playing an eighteen game schedule followed by round robin playoffs, while eight clubs vied for the hionours in W.M.B.A. Pee-Wee League which was augment- cd through the regular sehedule by two clubs from Ajax, which the Whitby assoc. took under ils wing in order to give the Ajax lads an opporlunity for more play. The Ban tamn Hou se League, one of the most satisfying develop- ments for local officiais has grown steadily each season and with clubs from Oshawa, Bowmanvilie and Ajax sometimes entered, the competition is keen. In giving this group- of older boys worlhwhile summer activity, the assoc. feel it makes one of ils most effective contrib- utions 10 the coniunily. As in previous years arrangements are being made for workouts to begin later this month or in early April for prospective pitchers and catchers for Whitby's E.O.B.A. entries, along wilh gene rai calisthenic drills for other hope- fuis. E.O.B.A. sehedules slart in mid-May, and'if spring is late in arriving there is uitie lime for outdoor condilioning before the cry of "Play Bail". Open tryouts are held for ail clubs before the season commences, and any boy who wants a crack at trying for a spot on an "ail-star" club will have an opportunity. Local officiais are looking forward with interest to the outcome of discussions which wiil take place at the annua] convention of the Ontario Basebaîl Assoc. 10 be held this week in Ottawa. Since organized sports of ail types started in Ontario the traditionai way of classifying clubs and series bas been by population. With the advenî of regionai governments throughout the province, the old bounidaries and population figures have become meaningl 'ess and a new way has 10 bc found for realigning areas and populations. Gordon Hanna, Past Pres. of the W.M.B.A. and Vice-Pies. of the E.O.B.A. this year wiI be in Ottawa for the sessions. With the influx of people ta Whitby in the past year with the opening of new subdivisions, W.M.B.A. officiais are looking forward to an even larger enrolment for the upcoming season. They are also hopeful that among the newcomers to the,, comrnunity wil be ,people wilîîng, to help ini thé pro)grampmeas coaches and official .s becaâuse assistanceé is always required.
