r1 KALNINS ON... j"Newsworthy"pi News There are days in the newspaper business when noth- ing seems to be happening. Well- almost nothing. No strikes, no anti-Communist demonstrations, no spectacular fires, no0 rapes and murders and flot even a good political brawl. One would say - just another duil day. But, the paper (any newspaper, for that matter) must publicli on time - news or no news. How to avoid possible crisis and stili maintain an unînterrupted flow of news coverage, I- have a few suggest ions to pass on. At random, 1 have a number of weekly and daily newspapers in the Toronto area which could use the following 'news stories' and photographs on a 'slow day' when no earth-shaking events have been recorded in the newsroorn. THE TORONTO SUN: They could dig up a militant Womens Lib member and do a full-page spread on bra- burning at Allan Gardens; The police reporter wiIl have no difficulty finding the man vho's better-known as the Terror of the Toronto Courts. He could provide a colorful copy complete with Polish pro-verbs. The popular centre-sprcad of pictures would make an eye-full with Miss Bikini entries (only like 9) for the next year's pagent. The ieft-over sapce from Sunshine Girl can be devoted to a three-colunn picture of Paul Rîmsteed streaking across Yonge Street. TORONTO DAILY STAR: Could feature more sob stories on those crusty, old World War 1 fliers - mnust be over 80 or else; A full page could be opened (with the kind perm- ission of the Publisher) for a Spectacolour spread on be- hind the scenes activities at Norm's Grill. And, the usual overnight stories from Washington and Ottawa(if Martha or Pierre has flot said anything of great importance) can be replaced by an Insight Page on Chinatown. For instance: Why More and More Torontonians Switch to Egg Rolîs and Chop Suey? Due to lack of political news, the Metro Sect- ion (M-2 or B-1, depending on how you read the news- paper) can be used for an in-depth story on VD clinics and natural childbirth. THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Because of the acute shortage of Queens Park exposes, I suggest the city editor look for news elsewhere - in flooded basements, in mangled flower beds, on old TTC streetcars, on Subways, etc. On a slow day here, are somne stonies for consideration: "How Crom- bie Lost His Pants At Royal York"; "Needharn Lectures on Sex at Guelph University"; "Rumors Persist At CBC - by Blaik Kirby"; "TTC Needs More Riders"; and "Cat Saved From 2-Alarm Blaze". THE NEWS ADVERTISER: When local press releases and minutes of the last week's council meeting are about to dry up, may 1 suggest these remedies: Get hold of the Town's dog catcher, he's bound to corne up1 with a tear-jerking story for next week's Front Page; Send a sports reporter to ail local music schools - a rnusically- minded sports feature is likely to appear on the Editorial Page; And, when things get really tough, the editor can always Write a Letter To The Editor, most likely defending or criticizing his own editorials he wrote a week before. by This Week. Here are the headline news: "Hey, Pierre Where Is Your Wife?"; "Neyer on Sunday or Monday"; "A First Fish-Eye Mountie"; "Take Your Hot Car To Duffin's Creek"; "From Pipe To Pipe - Peace To Hash"; "Mona Cheesed Off"' and "Help Before Going The Route 0f. Leacock's Pili-Third Installment"; "Dewar Fights Zom- bies";,"Bob And His Boys Are Stupid".
