Board Says No Wayi. Mrs. Palmer WHITBY - Anna Marie Palmer, 24, the Whitby op- erating room nurse who won't assist with abortion opera- tions, has been told that she will not be reinstated to the operating room at the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital. John Kunetsky, Hospital A dminstrator, informed Mrs. Palmer Thursday night of the board decision. He said that the decision was reached in a private meeting of the board last Wednesday night tonowimg the hospitals ann- ual general meeting. Mr. Kunetsky refused to state the reasons for the decision. Mrs. Palmer said that when she was informed, of the decision she "was really up- set about the whole thing and didn't even ask him (Mr. Kunettky) what the leasons were why they reached that decision." She said that she is plan- ning on "going to the Human Rights Commission and try to get them to investigate the situation." Mrs. Palmer said that she has no inten- tions of resigning. "That would be backing out of the whole situation and that wo- uld mean that all the work we have put into it would mean nothing." She added "I feel that there are an awful lot of nurses who will be in the same predicament as me in the future. That's why I feel I have to keep on with this and try to make it easier for other nurses, so that they won't have to go through the same hell that I went thr- ough." Mrs. Palmer clarified her feelings saying "actually what I'm fighting heie is the conscience clause so that Vol. 4. She feels that "if doctors can have freedom of consci- ence in their work, then nurses should have freedom of conscience also, and it's simply because a doctor is self-employed and a nurse is an employee, and this is no excuse to deprive her of this right. And just because we are paid does not give the employer the right to dictate to us to go against our conscience." :r: Er
