The word tetanus cornes from the Greek for stretch, and the disease itself causes spasm and rigidity in the muscles - usuially those in the neck and back. What causes tetanus is cntry of dirt (carrying tetanus gernis) into the tissues-, this might occur in an auto accident, or in such mishaps as a lawn-mower injury, or even by- stepping on a rusty nail. Tetanuis can happen only when the skin is penetrated; you can't get it from havîng dirt oi yoLI- or even ýy swallowing dirt. The injur? doesn't have to be serious: a rose thorn prick is sufficient injury to allow the ent rance of tetanus germs. Fortunately, we have the means to combat tetanus: thc weapon is a vaccine which became avaîlable in the< 1930s. In Ontario, tetanus im- munization is readily available to everyone (and is covered by OHIP). The primary series of injections is usually given to infants and young children in a combined vaccine that also inimunizes against polio, diph- theria and wbooping cough. Although cases of tetanus arc un- common in Canada, public health officiais stress the importance of keeping up your immunity through- out school years and aduit life with 'booster' shots every five years. The reason for this is quite corn- pelling. Among the handful of tetanus cases still encountered in Ontario each year, 50 percent are fatal. So even though it's a rare disease, tetanus can be a killer. The lesson to bc learncd from it is to take advantage of the protec- tion that medical science afl'ords us. Brooklin Bylilnes Hi again! Well. where did the comnmunity disappear to? After spending the last couple of years talking and listening to people bursting with ideas and activities; also listening to mnoans and groans of those ini the area who think they arc liard donc to by thc town management. 1I had thotiglit(lic people of the arca would have jumped ut thc chance of thieir own columnn in whicli to Voice their opinions. Here >. s a paper wviling t0 give space to the VOice of the Whitby rural arcas (lîow nany other papers would do the sainie'?'), and suddenly.there is a widcspread outbreak of laryngitis. Perhaps l'ni being 100 unkind. Maybe you are just ini a state of shock ut finding a paper that scemis to care for your interests. It is a surprise 1 know. But if you don't corne out of shock vcry soon it will be too late and the column will be dead. And the epigraph could read.died thro' lack ofîinterest. So corne on, feed me the information or the grouses, and lets get nioving. Last Fcbruary 1 read that new emphasis on recreationai facilities was one of the main thrusts in the budget of the Town of Whitby, and that Brooklin was one of the areas in which the Counicil întended to build tennis courts. On Wednesday, May l5th, in the Free Press, 1 read that Fred Beckette the deputy recreation director, now HOPES the tennis courts will bc ready this year, and that the recreation department is 10 report furtiier in two weeks. May 1 remind ail concerned that the tennis season is upon us NOW. 1 appreciate that studies of sucli projects have to be made but they have had since February to discuss the plans, and if they don't get a move on the tennis season will be over for I1974. How many miove "further reports"' will be needed before they decide that the youth of Brooklin can play on proper courts instead'of the roads? Mr. Emin and Mr. Lovelock must be awarc of the very limiited facil- ities for recreation there arc up here in tic forth ward, and 1 sintercly hope that as our clccted representatives thcy are putting thecir maxinmum effort into obtaining these courts with tlhc minimum of dclay. As I said last week the Brooklin Spring Fuir is on the lst of June. If tradition hoîds up the weathcr should be as 'ý- good as in prcvious ycars and the Fuir and Parade better. IOne change is that the Parade will be startiîîg at 10 a.m. not at 1 2 noon as in previous years, and with the effort of thelpi sad e go one. tOneofrequst osanding hep torgnizersathgoopoeratOneof ail appoacheadito ...bas anyonc a clown costume (or costumes) to fi ta highschool age chld that'they would be willing to loan for the day. If so, cail 655-3750. The Fair will be officially opened at 1:30 p.m. by Mr. Walter Beath, Chairman of the 1 Region of Durham. As well as cattie judging, horse hitch- ing, etc. there yvill also be a horse drawing contest for the Hobson Trophy, and a log sawing contest. In the arena there will be judo, square dancing and folk singing. And for 'the dog lover there wil be a dog obedience demon- stration. With al this and a midway plus a dance in the arena at night (oldtime and modern), this is a day that the whole family wül be able to enjoy. Don't forget that the night before the parade you cao enjoy a semi-formal dance at the Oddfellows Hall, Bagot Street. It starts at 8 p.m. and there'll be music for ail ages, door and spot prizes and a buffet lunch. It's organized by the youth group - Level Four, and promises to be a good night. Cail Wayne Disney at 655-3160 or Murial Pengelly at 655-4596 for advance tickets or pay at the door - $3.00 a couple or $2,00 single. Once again, that's it for this week. My number is 655-3750 and 1 hope l'Il beciîearing from some of you real soon. LIZ. Proclamation M inor Basebali Day Take notice that- by Resolution of the Council of the Town of Whitby, May 2Sthi, 1974, being the opening day of the basebali season, has been proclaimed as Minor Basebal Day in and for the Town of Whitby. Dated at the Town of Whitby this 22nd day of May, A.D., 1974. D.G. Newman, 1 Mayor. Soccer Opener In a bard fought close contest Whitby Dunlops lost 10 Wiiiowdale S.C. in the Stan Wardlow Trophy First Round Opener by a score of 3 - 2. The game was played aI Peel Park under fair weather conditions. The first goal came at the 25 minute mark by the outside right taking a pass from bis inside righî. Taking a first time shot the bail landed in the bottomn left hand corner of the net iving Dunlop's goalie Ailan Gedd as no chance at ail. At tie end of haif lime the score was O0I It îook Dunîlop 15 mins. to equalize in the second half. The inside left, Doug Crooks, making a solo run from the centre from 12 yards out put a hard shot in the roof of the net. Then 6 mins. later Tom Mîlliken took a pass off Rick McNeil from 20 yards out and made it 2 - 1 for Dunlops. Willow- dale S.C. came back int the gamre with the equalizer on the corner kick. Then just 3 mins. to go, Wilowdale scored again mak- ing the final score 3 - 2 This is one of the many good soccer games we will be seeing aI Peel Park Ibis year as'Whiîby Dunlops are using it. for . al - their home.' games. on an o0W can or put a ptchfork throtîgh your foot, and you've kept your tetanus immunization up-to- date, you niay require only a booster dose: but for someone with- out previous immunity, the first dose doesn't give sufficient imme- diaite response to prevent tetanus following the injury. In this situa- tion an injection of tetantis immuine globuilin is usually given as well as the flrst tetanus toxoid dose. It is important to follow through with the rest of the tetanus toxoid series s0 this process doesn't have to be repeated with a subsequent injury. This raises the whole question of knowîng just what immunization you have, or don't have. Certainly, keeping records repre- sents a sensible investmnent in your future health - and it doesn't have to bc a laborious process: a simple listing, carefully filed away, is all you need. Ask your doctor how often booster doses.are required against diseases like tetanus, and then make sure that you (and your children) are taking full advantage of the available protection. The tetanus organismn is in the soul everywhere, so it's quite easily acquired. But it doesn't have to bc dangerous. The means to prevent tetanus are readily available. ibru 'o, CARE's nutritious meals help 25 million children to a healthier' future.
