PAGE 4, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS SIRD'S VIEW -JM OUAIll A Special Offer I get them ail the time in the mail and, I suspect, so do half the people in Canada. They are always personal messages that offer me, and just ne, this special deal for a short.time only. I checked on the last offer and the 'short time' turned out to be a year or until the dealer had sold his stock of 50,000. Another thing that makes me inmediately suspicious is that if the offer is just for me how come the letter is a printed form letter and the envelope is addressed to 'occupant'. I really can't figure out if these guys are kidding me or themselves into thinking I would believe they drop everything and sit down and write me a line offering such a fantastic deal I wouldn't believe! The last deal I was offered by mail was a complete set of children's books that gave the history of everything from Peter Rabbit to Pierre (the great father) Trudeau. Now as I am not married and being a male, childless too, I can only assume that my nanie was picked at randon or they are insinuating that I am so uneducated as to be men-tally classed with the little tykes who would be in the market for such a set. Occasionally an offer comes along for a set of books that I would like to have but even then I an dubious because I feel if I shopped around at Coles or some such place I would probably get the same set of books much cheaper and with half the hassle. The hassle I am referring to is the complicated procedure whereby they mail you the books you may or may not want and then bill you for them. If you make the mistake of ripping open the box containing the book only to dis- cover you don't want it you could wind up paying a dollar or more to ship the fool thing back. The snarter book sellers put a ripoff envelope on the front of the box and the contents of the envelope describe the book so you can decide whether to take it or not and if not you just mark "return" on the box and the post office will send it back at no cost to you. My male masculinity was seriously in doubt when a rec- ent offer came in the mail offering me a "world of beauty" kit with altkinds of different makeups and booklets on how to powder my face and make my eyelashes look longer. The morning after the odd Saturday night I might consider a kit that would make my face so it doesn't look like I lost an argument to a Mac truck but long eyelashes and plucked eyebrows I don't need at the worst of times. Someone else out there in mail-out land must have inside information on how hard I've been working lately because he keeps sending me booklets and brochures about vacation trips to the exotic spots of the world. I still remember the "Action Trip" that offered an exciting trip to the Sinai Peninsula about the time of the Mid-East conflict. They'd probably pick me up from the airport in a tank and I could picture the lifeguard at the hotel swimming pool wearing a bathing suit, an automatic rifle and a belt full of hand grenades. The one trp I really remember was the "Relive the Great Moments of the Titanic" trip in which they would take you out in a boat destined for the scrap heap and would crash int an iceberg so you could experience firsthand how the victims of the Titanic felt on that momentous occasion. I also noticed the trip had to be paid for in advance. I've really nothing against my mailman - except that he con tinues to bring me bis after countless warnings - but I wish he would give my envelope marked "occupant" to some other occupant more deserving of the honour.
