h PAGE 2, WEDNESIJAY, SEPTEMBER 4,1974, WHITBY FREE PRESS Thanks To Our Loyal Readers'... Our sales staff' tell us that some downitown nimerchants feel that they don't have t0 advertise because they1 have more business t/ian t/îey cati hand/e! That 's a new one t0 us because ive don't know very many businesses fortunate enough to be in t/laI position. Even the ones that are (iîke Simpson's) STILL advertise! Ironically, thinking backabout a ycar or so ago, we rernber three or four businesses ivho said t/he same thfing THEN ..and theyp'e ALL gone out of businîess since. We know of another local business mari (wvho also wont' adver- tise) who is finding business so bad that he 's trying 10 rentt his premises and get out of town. There 's no quiestion about it. In today 's age of prîvare transportation it s tough for downtown retail businesses t0 comnpete wiîh the plazas and shopping cen tres, especially when the clown îown merchants don't boîher trying 10 attract customers by collective (or individual) advertising. Just to prove our point, a local drycleaîîer and a private individuial each spent two dollars placing small ads ini the Free Press - each received over thirty calis. Now ivwou/dn 't you say their two dol/ars nws well spent? (We '1 supply their names if you wanî verification *- and others 10.) O.THER towns with HALF the population of' Whiîby, like Lindsav (about 13,000), advertise enough 10 support îlot on1e, BUT TWO newspapers. The advertising being done by W4hitby merchants won' support ONE. And bejôre somnebody accuses us of '"sour grapes " let us point out whaî then happens (and is happening now). The Free Press, despite the faci thati ii is trying t0 fi/i the need Jô)r a W/itbv neivspaper, must never-îhe-less operate as a business tryîing 10 stay in business. In o ther words, we have to produce enough income (advertising) t0 meet our expenses..because we p/an on being around for quite aiw/ile. HEPIGE FOR TH, if loc-al businesses don't make use of' their local media (and our cheaper rates) 10 reach the local people, OTH7R rnerchanîs wlI and obviously wl/i take' Whitby business out of town. One wou/d have thought that the amount of business being lost by Whitby merchants would have become obvious especially /ast winter when special buses were brouglî into Whiîby'to bus Whiîby peop/e (and their mon- ey) out of zown, but many merchants sat back and let it happen. So wvhen you gel clown to the Initty-gritty', although the size of t/e Eree Press hasn't i,îcreased over the last few years, our loyal readership attests to the faci that the quaI- ity of our newspaper and our honest reportîng of local issues has won many readers. (The Free Press has no poli- tical obligations or ambitions, nor are we starting any new football leagues.) The number of readers who are vo/un- tari/y sending us ten do/lar bis and purchasing subscrip- lions is increasing weekly. Hence, we feel that although we have a long way t0 go, we must be on the right îrack. SOMETHING ELSE we're'proud of is our classified page. If you wan t 10 know where a newspaper's strongest readership is, /ust look at it s c/assified (private) ad section. The Oshawa newspapers con tain nearly ail Oshawa ads, the Ajax newspapers (although claimîing 10 a/so be Whitby newspapers) carry mostly Ajax adg, but NO OTHER newspaper, regardless of size, runs as many lVhitby private advertisements as the Free Press. Again, we think this says something for our loyal read- ershîp. STAR TING with t/ils issue, the Free Press has purchased a weekly 'Andy Capp cartoon', a weekly crossword puzzL, PLUS other cartoons and features of interest which we hope will add t0 the en/oymen t of Free Press readers. To our many loyal readers and advertisers who have make this possible, we cant t hank you enough. To the skepîcs, what can we say but maybe in ANOTHFJR five years we '1 win you over..IF you 'te sîil around.
