Porno Raids A In Toronto On July 24, in a copyrighited column in The Whitby Free Press, 1 broke a nation-wide story on Canada's first porno moviehouse, better-known as the Cinema Blue Film Club which opened its doors to the general public at Yonge and Gerrard Streets in Toronto. A week later a Toronto Daily Newspaper stole chunks of my information from that particular column and pre- sented the Chuck Abrams story in their own typical version. I don't mmmd îhem stealing my story, but at least îhey could have displayed some decency by acknowledging the initial source. This week I revisited the now-infamous porno theatre and found the doors padlocked. The sign above the entrance of the Mini Theatre read: "Morality you won. We're broke". On September 1 7, as if by instinct, I reach- ed for the Sun (and not for the Star, as the jingle blurts) and immediately 1 came across Connie Nicholson's story on Cinema Blue Film Club where shie reported: "The telephone has been disconnected and club owner Chiuck (for Charles) Abrams is no longer in town". Ironically, the sane day 1 saw Abrams strolling up and down Yonge Street and chatting with sortie of bis former custorners. At one point, Abrarns, a heavv-seî mani wcar- ing a broad grin. stood right in front of his closed movie- house and openly' discussed police raids on his club -.9 altogether. "The whiole thing becanie a costly affair for me and my pariners from the United States", said Abrais who's now being charged with possessing and showing obseene mate rial in a public place. But, was his film club a public place'? That question, of course, will be resolved at a later date when Abrams and four other defendants will appear before a magistrale. According îo Abrams, he was operating a private club on a menibership basis. No one was physically dragged into bis tiny theatre and ordered bo watch Linda Lovelace performing sexual acts in Deep Throat. In fact, if anybody felt offended by the explicit sex scenes in the movie, Abramns would more than Gladly refund their money. He was not interested in unhappy customers. But, in the eyes of the Morality Squad, Abrams was breaking the law. In other words, he was commilting a crime with no visible victims in sight. For that, hie had Io put up with enormous police harassment. And, for that, he even had to subject himself to "personal" searches and verbal abuse. Said Abrams: "One day police took al my cash away, including cash receipts. They would sirnply aci as if they were the sole owners of thie cinema. And, most of the tirnes, they were rude to me and downright abnoxious" Police so far have kcpt the usual veil of silence and '.no comment" attitude.
