F/ipping through page after page it didi t take long to discover thai Whitby origlnated stories and Whitby business advertisiîîg were far in t/le niiîiority. In faci t/îeyvwere so mue/ iniîthe minority as to make thie w/iole section a big loke. But we shouldt 't judge tuent loy /îarslîly. For ail we know they ueally did mean t/le whole effort as a lonigue-li- cheek loke aîiyway. We're basing t/us opinion on some of their 'news' stories. Onie newvs fias/ivas about /zow t/he Whuiby îown council will decide ai their nexi meeting Give therm 'E' for effort... whether they wl/I apologize t0 the Si. A ccording to many farmers who have ouitdôor plunîbing the radio wl/i neyer replace the newypaper but' we bet if t/îey llved in Ajax they V c/hange t/îeir ininds after hearing on the radio the same day the newspaper came oui that the Wýhitby towvn couijeil /zad already apo/ogized 10, the St. Catharines Indiar, Gentre about the float. The frontî page story ini the "Whitby " edition was a real gripper. !t tbld the lhf andi death struggle of a candy store owner ini Whitbv w/îo ivas /iaving a terrible lime niaking up bis mind wheîher or îlot to se/I a youngster $10 worth of candv at once. The business was iden tified by tlvodîffer- eni t naines ini tie article (and on/y -two of the three young- sicrs in t/le photo were iden îified) but we sort ofexpected tha t because thé' newspaper lias two differenti naines on th e front page banner. Obviously the name of the whole silly game is ca/led, "Try 10 kunk the litile guy " which is what they think of thie Whitby Free Press. Their "Whitby "section is supposed t0 make ail of us in town think they really put the paper out jusit for Wh iîby. Whén they win the game they 'i put us oui of business - s0 îheyý think. Actua/ly we're very fiatîered they would go to ail this trouble and in the mean time readers in Whitby ge t a chance io find aý'1ittle humour in an Aja.x paper., Humour like their story about the Ajax Council and their quote l'y Counici/lor Malcolmn who said, "The corn is a little laie this year'" T/uc corn may be laie ikis year but il sure is well and living a frulîful life ini an Ajax paper. Bird 's Eve View can top t/ual story. alive and Not even Dear Sir;, It is most unfortunate that the Whitby Council does not have the wisdom to deter or prohibit the continuous spread of housing develop- ments within its jurisdiction. Maybe, for obvious reasons, a certain amounït of satisfac- tion is realized- by saying "we need development, etc." but, when you think about it we really don't. At present Whitby-Brook- lin and its rural areas is -a 44gem" and should be pro- tected from sprawl to keep at least a bit of Ontario unique. Do we not learn anything from the experience of others? Take a look at Barrie, Orangeville, Bowmanville, to mention only a few places, where beautiful farnilands are now covered with asphait and houses, not to mention the additîinal tax burden thrust upon the pioneer residenis of these communities. If Whit- by wishes to be a "bedroomn satelite" for Toronto, so be it, but the people should de- cide this and not a few councillors and developer friends (besides we already have a sewer). Has anyone ever thought of capitalizing on our so- called Industrial Park? Push a littie harder for induistry at its present location and force Toronto (o beconie the "bed- room satelîte" of Whitby. In this way we would retain our rural quality of life in which we cari continue to enjoy such things as trees, species of birds, hear the 4"&îoo" of a cow and the "baa" of shcep and as- an added bonus win a reduction in taxes, which we are told industry is supposed to pro- vide us. The only one who beneflits from a housiiig development is the developer and his pros- perity is generally at the ex- pense of presently established residents. Why import the problems created by condom- iniums, townhouses, public housing eyesores and "suni robbing" apartment buildings? It is very nice of our planning department to invite people to give opinions as to what kind of development should go where but I suggest the question should be "do you wan t thiis development at aIl"? I arnconfident, when the people think of what each developinent costs us. the answer would be a re- sounding "NO". It sad- dens nie that the only desire of our local governînent is to build, build, build, just to increase constituents. Doesn't it nîalCe more sense to ]cave a littie bit of nature and open spaccs for our childien ratiier than just a few man-rnade sterile parks?
