Report f rom the Legisiature BILL NEWMAN M.P.P., ONTARIO- SOUTH RIDING Recently, more than 140 of the worlcl's nations met in Romne for the World Foodi Conference. The purlpose of the conférence was to seek means of tceding the iitions of people in titider-develeped nat ions who face widespread sta rvat ion. We have rcad mnany reports ini the-ncwspapers indicating that the conference ended in failure. Although a World Food Council was establishied, little cencrete action was taken to assist the many victims of serious malnutrition. 1 mention this conférence ty vay of an introduction to somnething Ontario is doing by itself which cornes within the subject matter of that world meeting. A group of Ontario'farmiers produce a produet known as the white bean, a crop Which lias high nutritional and protein value. During the 1973 crop year, growers of the white bean in our province experienced weather conditions which caused the bean to splij during and after harvest, thereby making it unsuitable for canning. The food value of the produet, however, is not affected by the splitting. [n order te avoid spoilage, the Government of Ontario decided te purchase approxirnately 65,000 bags of split white, beans left over from the 1973 cr01,. This high nutritional value food will be made' available to the Red Cross which will assume responsibility for ship- ping it to the drought-stricken areas of the wvorld. Naturally. this initiative will not solve the massive starvatien which exists. but it is a beginning. If even a small number of chiîdren miay be saved frei starving te death, the projeci ill have been worthwhile. ln recent years, the amount et leisure time available te each individual has increased significan îly. With fewer working hours and longer holidays, we have developed a need to turn out attentions to fmnding more neaningful and satisfactory programs of recreation and sports in each comn1unity. The new Conîmunity Recreation Centres Act which is currently being considered by the Legislature refleets the desire of the Ontario Gommnnenîte accorno- date present and future needs in community recreation activity.
