NuWay Rug Sonie time ago,, a wcIl-known Canadian television sta- tion was featuring a special one-hour program on air safety both in Canada and the United States. In this face-filled program, many interesting questions related to the flying public were raised and many not-so-interesting questions we re left unanswered. Generally, it was a highly educa- tional program on today's air travel, but at the sanie time it was a somewhat frightening accounit of what can happen to you while you're "hanging-în" about 30,000 feet above sea level. Just shortly before showing this rlîought-Orovoking documentary, l'ni told, sorte airline officiais tried to sup- press the show on the grounds that the weIl-researchied* "safety" facts might unnecessarily alarni would-be air travellers. Nevertheless, the station wvent ahead with the program and later on received the usual amount of complaints-allegcdly froni people representing theairline industry. As for myseif. 1 kept away from the major airlines for several months before 1 had had a chance to forget sorne of the less pleasing aspects of air travel. However, the coin- mentator for this TV special rnaintained that air travel is stili much safer than, say, driving a car on 401. But, does this make you.feel better? Recently, as you may recail, two Boeing 727's crashed the same day. The first mishap killed 95 people and the second one took only three fives-fortunately, one mîght Say. When an airliner crashes, there is really nothing much one can do - except pray, if that makes you féeel any better. As a regular air traveller at one trne, l*ni deeply con- vinced that the safety devices on our airpianes are close tu being obsolete, unless the crash itself is of a minor nature plane skidding off a tarmac or catching a-fire while stili on the runway. But, if anvthing happens in mnid-air, you might as well bid farewell to beloved Mother Earth. This situation, then, brings me to the annual plea of building much safer airpianes here in Canada and abroad. lWc need an aircraft that is safe au any speid and at aîîy altitude. Thei modern aero-technology sure can achieve this, sincc wce have donc greater and more spectacular things in the past - for instance, landing a man on the moon or being able to create artîficial life on earth. 1Money should not be a problem in design'ing a hundred per1 cent sare aubloIp. Ttiis iypc of airerafî is necded badly, since the air safety record (at least, te, mx ling> Iunn't been very good. Why should we risk our lives, onlv be- cause moniey and trne appear to be the main obstacles? 1 say, let's scrap the airline business, if people who build our modern planes cannot gudrantee a safe flight frorn point A to point B. Lives are to bc saved <fi any cost. Now that the Holiday Season is in fllt swing, 1 suspect, more people will lose their lîves in air disasters. And, more people, 1 hope, will think twice before boardîng that huge flying monster- a potential killer at aIl tîmes.
