To canopy or not Shiould the Texaco service station on the corner of Brock and Dunlop Streets be converted to a self-serve oper- ation and, if so, should the company be required to in- staîl an all-weather canopy? Council argued over the matter for the better part of an hour at it's past meeting. This caused Councillor Jimi Gartshore to suggest that council allow the conversion with or without a canopy. Ile said that. if there was Wh*itby Y Thce*Whitby YMCA has enough programns to kecp cverybody lhappy during the rernaining winter and spring nio ntiis. For the pre-schoolers, the Y lias four programs dcsigned to educate and entertain. Co-op play schools is one of those. The prograrm ini- volves choice of imaginary play, painting, crafts, sand play, etc. for the first hour followed by refreshments, 9tory time and organized play. The cost is $10 a month for non-members of the Y and $8 for members. Pre- registration is required by January 10. Parents must assist in the program once a mon th. the self-serve gas bar during inclement weather. Gartshore feit that lie echoed the sentiments of a vàst majority of local citizens. However, council didn't go along with Gartshore's suggestion and instead tabled the matter until the admini- strative committee establishes whether or flot any develop- ment of the property i s planned by the company. Programs Register today for the Canadian Literature course, to begin January 15. Tnie program will involve a survey of Canadian literature higli- lighting the major figures, formative influences and somne common themes. The poetry section will be essen- tially a chronological survey. The works of major figures sucli as Richier, MacLennan and Roy will be considered. The 20 hour course, made up of lectures, seminars and discussions, begins next Wed- nesday at Henry Street High. and costs $23 or $20. Regular league play and tournaments Make up the team handball program, commencing 6:30 toniglit at Henry Street Higli. Fee is $3 and $2 for six weeks. Beginners sewing starts to- morrow niglit at 7 at Henry Street High. The programn is designed to give basic instruê- tion in sewing skills. A program in social danc- ing runs for 10 consecutive Tuesdav nights from 7 to 8:30 at Henry Street Higli and will feature, Latin Ameni- can dances, tango, rumba, cha-cha, samba, foxtrot, waltz, swing, quick step and polka. Cost is $35 per couple or $25 for singles. There are many more pro- gramis being offered by the 'Y', but because of lack of space, they weren 't listed. A membership ini the Y costs* $3 for students, $5 for adults and $ 12 for families. Membership means a saving in most of the courses.
