Brookliîn Bylinos 1 was delighted on January 28th to see approximately 60 people turn out to voice their opinion and show their interest in fo 'rming the North Ward Commnunity Associa- tion. Bill Burgess and Dave Denison opened the meeting by discussing the information that they had collected regard- ing the proposed development plans for this area'and why they feit that such an association would be worthwhile. Councillor Don, Lovelock also gave information and answ- ered the variety of questions that came from the fidor .. questionsthat reflected the concern and the interest that those present have for their area. Lt was obvious that both Bill and Dave, and possibly others, have given a great deal of 'their time to attending meetings and collecting as much data as possible, and th erefore it seemed only natural, to elect them as President and Vice-president of the N.W.C.A. Judy Durkee is Secretary and June Cartrightis Treasurer. A Task Force was compiled of Jack Woodward, Derek Mawes, Ted McDonald, and Ted Gibb. All positions are for the next four months, during which it is hoped that mem- bers of th.e N.W.C.A. will get to know each other better and will therefore be able to elect a permanent committee. Most associations form 'after the event', and have of necessity, therefore, to take a military- or protesting posi- tion. But, as Bill pointed out, we are not forming to protest development, but rather to offer suggestions for the best approach to be taken for our. area. And surely ýas residents, many- of very long standing; we do have that.right. Especi-. ally as devefopment will affect us ail in one way or anoth'er..as individuals, thro' taxation as business owners and socially. It is easier to rouse the interest of the public after the event, bu 't I'm sure that ail present hope that as time goes on, more and more North Warders will give their support in determining the best policy for their home environment. We do have an opinion, we do have a voice.... let's just 'get together and decide what we want, and then let the powers that be know, in a calni and factual manner. 1 do have hopes for the N.W.C.A. but 1 wish that 1 could say the same for animal control. Somehow certain people when they get an animal, seemn to think that they own the neighborbood. And it's not getting better. It would seemn that they have a perverted sense of their own importance, and that they can fiaunt the by-laws..by-laws that are put into action for ahl, whatever your occupation or status in the town. 1 don't care if you have ail the money in the world, and that you can afford to keep paying the fines .. your dog should not be allowed the freedom of the streets or your neighbors garden. If you are too stupid or too ig- norant or so anti-social that you won't abide by the regula- tions that are laid down, then you shouldn't own an animal. And if Council doesn't mind paying out $40,000 for animal control, I do! Especially when the need could be cut down by refusing to ailow persistent offenders to own or harbor WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1975, PAGE 9 an animal. Wake up, down 'there in the Municipal Offices, and become aware that a $ 10, fine is not. going to discour- age. some people. They need stronger stuff than that. And while we are at it..a complaint from the Brooklin sub- division where they are flot only bothered by dogs, but it would seem the~y are inundated by cats. 1 neyer could understand why dogs where restricted and llcenced..we even used to have a dog counit (why flot bring it back!) .. but cats were allowed to roam free, and the owners neyer had to bother with a permit or a licence. 1 think that the day has corne when ALL pets that are likely to use public areas, -should have a licence or permit..and that if you are. willing ýto allow your animais to.breed willy-nily, then you shôuld have a special breeders permit. And of course you are flot allowed to have an animal if you can't or won't control it. Saturday is the second Saturday of the rnonth and therefore it's paper drive day. Once again may I remnind you that the boys of the lst and 2nd Cubs and Scouts of the area wil, with their helpers, be roaming the North Ward lo(oking for your well 'tied bundies of paper..cata-' logues and magazines are to be included. Have your offer- ings out before 9:30 a.mn..our boys are early birds and have only enougli time to do a road once. They like everything collected before 11: 30..and the North Ward is rather large to have to go around once in two hours, neye'- mid twice. con't on Page 12 M ____________ BROWN'*S F00 DM ASTER BROOKLI-N, ONTARIOj *Courtesy~ NORTH WHITBY PHONE 655m452 alue cto atjlsfacmo JUW !OOD mIErv !
