Free Press Photo by M&çe Burgess L)espite a second-period lapse, the Whitby McDonalds defeated the high-flying Cam- bridge Hornets 54 in Senior 'A' action last week., The game, played at Iro- quois Park Arena on Thurs- day, also saw the return of Whitby defenceman Bih Mur- ray who was suspended by the Canadian Amateur Hock- ey Association after jumping to the International Hockey League's Des Moines Capitals, a Philadeiphia Flyers affliiate. The win moved the Mc- Donalds four points ahead of the, fourth-place Orfilia Terriers. The Macs fought from behind twice 'in the game with accurate passinig proving the major factor in the vic- tory. Whitby's leading scorer, Wayne Weller, opened the, scoring at 1:05 of the first périod when he picked the puck ýout of a scramble and fired it past a helpless John McWilliams. Don Vipond put the teams on even terms when his back- hander eluded Macs' goalten- der' Bruce Durno just over one minute later. Carl Ahîsten scored his first of two goals from the slot on a pass by Gary Milroy. The Macs skated to the dressing room holding a 2-1 lead. However, Cambridge. coni- pletely dominated the middle frame, outshooting the hosts 14-6 and outscoring them 2-0. Steve Ringler tied the score at 13:56 and Don Vi- pond, with bis second, put Cambridge ahead 3-2 with a goal in the final minute of the second period. It was Whitby's turnin the ge5m4, third stanza as -they out- scored the visitors 3-I. In- cluded in that total were two power-play goals. Pete Vipond lifted the Macs into a tie after taking passes from Steve Hunt and Gary Milroy and tucking the puck into the short side. Carl Ahisten tallied his second goal of the night as Dennis Kraemner looked on frorn the penalty box. .The Hornets second penal- ty of the period was even more costly as Gary Milroy deflected Gord McCosh's slapsh ot for the winning goal.
