Whitby 'Y' Annual Photos by Mike Burgess Story by Rod Jerred The Whitby YMCA is for the whole family and not just for the men and boys. This was the theme of the ninth annual meeting of the Whitby District Family YMCA held in the-Henry St. High School last Thursday night. Bob Attersley, president of the Whitby-YMCA, backed this up with figures stating that, in 1974, the 'Y' attracted 2,509 female parti- cipants to its programs com- pared to 1,536 male partici- pants. Reflecting on this, Execu- tive Director Ron Hupfield said, "No longer can'anyone say that there's nothing for girls to do in Whitby:' Highlighting the evening's activities were the on stage demonstrations of the Y's various programs ranging from dancing to judo to gym- nastics displays. The demonstrations in- volved al age and sex groups from pre-school.girls (kinder- gym) to middle-aged men (Social Dance). President Attersley, in his report said, "Last year was our greatest year by far in our 'Y's history, but we must look to the future and not rest on past achievements" He added, "I am sure that everyone present believes that a second Whitby pool will be needed within the next few years. I believe that the Y could provide that need with some long range planning, in conjunction with the town of Whitby." President A t t e r s1 e y stressed that although the first Whitby Pool hasn't been opened yet, planning for a second pool must begin now as the first pool took many years of planning. The· city's co-operation would be needed in locating a site for the pool. The treasurer's report, given by Ron Hupfield, stated the total income of the 'Y' for 1974 was $94,166 leaving a deficit of $219.75 as compared to $375 for 1973 and $2,838 -in 1972. The report also listed the total number of registered and non-registered members at 4,025 for 1974 compared an increase trom the 3,275 members in 1973. At the meeting, Wayne De Veau, the town's new Direc- tor of Recreation, who will be working closely with the Y. Four new members of the Y's Board of DirectorsMau- reen Bogart, Pat Wilcox, Wayne King and Bob Mor.row were elected during the meet- ing. Mavor Des Newman was present at the meeting, and on behalf of the children of Whitby, thanked the adults involved in the Y's programs. Before the annual reports were given, people were able to look at the various dis- plays from many of the Y's programs. The displays in- cluded articles from the cro- chet, needlepoint, knitting and woodcraft classes, plus objects made by pie-school children in the 'Y's 'Ladies Take-a-Break' and 'Let's Create and Play School' pro-, grams. A buffet and slide show presentation depicting the 'Y's activities wrapped up the evening's events.
