NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS CO-ORDINATE SWIMMING For many years the gener- al public have not been familiar with the difference in the instruction and stand- ards of the three major aquatic organizations in Can- ada and the YMCA of Canada have just announced a co- ordinated approach between the three in the interests of many thousands of Canadians who are interested in learning to swim or improving their abilities. It has been long recog- nized that any differences of instruction and method were not as important as the recognition of the many similarities and the need to establish a public understand- ing of the inter-relationship. In an announcement signed by Al Thiersen of the Red Cross Water Safety Service, Jocelyn Palm of the Royal Life Saving Society and Don McCuaig of the YMCA of Canada, the Y has adopted the syllabus of train- ing and the water safety standards of the pupil train- ing progran of the Canadian Red Cross. The YMCA will retain their star designations now in use and replace current requirements with those of the appropriate Red Cross sSwmming levels as follows: RED CROSS - Beginner, Survival, Junior, Intermediate Senior. YMCA - Beginner, Survival, Star one, Star three, Star five. The YMCA will retain star levels two, four and six with minor revisions. Instructors qualified by both Red Cross and YMCA may present candidates for awards of both agencies. Instructors credentialled by only one agency may give out only the award of that agency. Whereas YMCA Life Saving awards may not be granted to candidates unless they earn the respective Roy- al Life Saving Society award, the same is not the case with Y swimming and water safety certificates and badges. With time increased availability of tri-agency certified instructors the opportunity to apply for awards of both agencies may become common practice. We encourage the conduct of instructor courses which sirnultaneously qualify Cana- dians with all three agencies, thereby eliminating the dupli- cation of effort.
