Broklin Bylines May 15th, 1974 saw the start of a new column in the Free Press, the Brooklin Bylines. Then I explained that commurlication in the community was the idea behind the column and that that could only corne about with YOUR interest and participation. There were weeks when it was touch and go whether we would have a column and there were also weeks when we were overflowing with news and views. We have touched on serious problems and also on simple community events. We have made mistakes and we have corrected them. And all in all I'd say we've had a pretty good year.....thanks to YOU. And so I wish us all a very happy birthday.....and I hope, many of em!! This is one of those shorter weeks.....we seem to have a luIl in the affairs of the North Ward. And I will take this opportunity to remind you that I need those calls if we are to stay in business another year. So get busy and call the magic number 655-3750 and share your activities or queries with the rest of the community. Reminder time. Are YOU joining in the Brooklin Spring Fair Parade.....either with a float or a decorated bike or baby carriage or even with your horse if you have one? Or you can simply dress up yourself and come in disguise..... adults as well as children.....and either solo or in a group. But the first Saturday in June is a fun day for everyone and Words fro WestLynde by Norm Mealing This has been an up and down, odds and sods type of week. There has been considerable rain, and lots of sunshine. There have been stunning victories gained by the New York Islanders, and equally defeats suffered by the Montreal Canadiens. There has also been a considerable amount of activity both inside, and outside of West Lynde this past week, but for the most part, it has been activity related to on-going, rather than new, issues. But, if you will bear with me while I cover some old ground, I promise that sorne new terrain will be surveyed. Property Taxes As incredible as it may seem, my .omments of last week on the issue of property taxes now appear to be unduly optimistic, at least as they relate to regional govern- ment. You will recall that I commented on news reports that had the regional budget increasing by 15% to 20%. Not so! Too low! The most recent information has the budget increasing by 29%, and the taxes by 35%. For what is hard to say given the lack of impact of regional government that I can see. But it is bigger, and more costly, so, therefore, it must be better. High-R ise As you are aware, a petition has been circulating throughout Whitby, and people are signing it and signifying . their opposition to the low-rental high-rise project pro- posed for Dundas and Jeffrey Streets. Early indications are that the townspeople are coming together to battle this one. What with the petition, and the public meeting planned for tomorrow night at Henry Street High School (7:45 p.m.), the Stop the High-rise movement is gaining momen- tum. We must, however, keep on pushing. So, corne on out to the meeting and create a noise that will be heard as far away as Queen's Park. While I'm at it, I understand that both Housing Minister Irvine, and Ertvironment Minister Newman have been invited to attend. As I write the column, there is no word on whether or not, they will be there. Assessment Although I haven't gathered all the returns, it would appear, from those that I have talked to, that more people lost, than won, in their attempts to have their assessment reduced. Post-mortems are not really necessary. It was a valiant, concerted effort to correct a situation which is clearly discriminatory. I would wager that the issue was lost due to the ever- promised introduction of market value assessment in 1976 for 1977. It is to be hoped, however, that the assessment people have learned and that the 1976 will bring an equit- able, fair system of assessment which will eliminate the discriminatory aspects of the present system. Men's Baseball The Whitby Men's Athletic Association 'Three-Pitch' Softball League opened its season on Thursday, May 9th. it can become more tun if YOU participate. If you would like an entry form then call 655-4378 now.....the forms have to be returned by May 16th so you don't have much time left. Tirne is also running out for thosç young ladies who want to enter the Miss Brooklin Spring Fair contest. Your forms have to be returned by May 18th, so hurry up and contact Wayne Disney, 655-3160, or Joe Pengelly, 655- 4596. May 24th is the date for some dancing up in Ashburn..... at the Community Centre. The fun starts at 8:30 p.m. with Frank Barclay providing the musical background. Tickets are $5 a couple, and there will also be lunch and a chance to win some prizes. Another dance is planned. This time down in Brooklin and at the Arena. The date. is 7th June.....yes, it is the dance to round up the Fair day. Last years was a great success, as those that jammed the place will testify. This years will be even better I'm sure.....so why not get your tickets now, and that way you won't be disappointed. They are selling for $5 a couple and are obtained by calling Mrs. Andrews at 655-3196 after 6 p.m. Other details are that it starts at 9 p.m. and goes on till 1 a.m. There will be bar privileges this year and the music will be provided by Earl Brown, a disc jockey. There will also be door prizes and refreshments. This will be a good way to end the day .-...a. strange coincidence.....the day starts with the Parade organized by Group 74 and ends with a dance also organized by Group 74.....each time for the Fair Board of course. Those ladies certainly get around!! Well it's time for me to sign off for this week. Don't forget o get busy calling with sone news for me. Sec you next week and until then, take care of yourselves.....don't overdo the great outdoor life now that the nice weather is here!! LIZ Although the players seemed a little rusty, the one garne played featured some fancy fielding, daring base-running, timely hitting, and even a double play or two. I say the one game played because the second game of the double- header between Team 3 and Tean 4 could not be played due to trouble with the lights. The opener saw Team 1 edgeTeam 2 by a score of 15 to 14. This is a good night for the fellows who play and judging from tie reaction of tie fans who were on hand, an enjoy- able evening for them as well. So, as we move into spring and summer, why not corne on over to Brock Street Park on Thursday evenings and take in the action. First game is at 7:00 p.m. and the second game, under the liglits, begins at 9:00 p.m. W.L.C.A. Notes Earlier, both here and in the newsletter, your attention was drawn to the next two big events on the Association Social Calendar. Althougli you will be hearing more on both events as they draw nearer, a small reminder to put tiern in your calendar, if you haven't donc so already. The next dance, featuring Uie Moth-Ball-Mo-Jo Band is to be held on Friday, June 20th, and Family Fun Day is to be held on Saturday, June 14th. Well, that's it for this week.
