PAGE 4, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS w hitby Voice of the County Town Associationvendett not against town Dear Sir; This letter is prompted by the comment made by Whitby Councillor, John Goodwin as quoted in the Whitby Free Press, Wednesday, June 18; 1975. I would like to address my comments to Councillor Goodwin, in response to his statement that the Corridor Area Ratepayers Association has disrupted the cash flow of the municipality because they "have a ven- detta against the town", the implication being that the Ratepayers Association is responsible for the town's debts. Dear Mr. Goodwin; I find it incredible that you can make such a statement and still ex- pect to retain credibility as a councillor. The Cor- ridor Area Ratep3yers Association is a legally constituted organization under The Corporation Act of the Province of Ontario with a charter issued and signed by the Honourable John T. Clement, who was at the time of issue, Minister of Consumer and Commer- cial Relations. This char- ter ciyes the association the right and obligation to represent the residents of the Corridor area "for the purpose of preserving and improving the pre- sent characteristics of the area as a residential area and considering and act- ing upon all matters re- lating to the amenities of the area and the comfort, safety and welfare 'of residents of the area". Let me quote further from the charter. The Corridor Area Ratepayers Association also has the following obiectives: (b) "To maintain liason with elected representa- tives of the area at all levels of government, to inform residents of the area of all existing and pending legislation, by- laws, ordinances and other governmental regu- lations affecting the area and to submit briefs, petitions and requests to aIl levels of government on matters affecting the area;" (c> "to assist in the pre- paration, promulgation and execution of ail by- laws, ordinances and other governmental regu- lations designed to secure the comfort, safety and welfare of .residents of the area;" and (d) "to maintain liaison with and co-operate with other associations of residents or ratepayers ià the said municipality of Whitby on matters of common interest to resi- dents of the areas within such municipality." The current concern of the association is pro- posed development in the corridor area. Resi- dents have made it quite clear that they are against development that incorporates a high per- centage of multiple fami- ly units on 26 and 30 foot lots. , Many of your neigh- bours, John (those people who put you in office - renember?) have literally invested blood, sweat and tears in their homes - built them with their own hands. Many of us have 15 to 20 years and better invested in this area. Do you find it so difficult to compre- hend that we would want to protect this invest- ment?....attempt to main- tain some semblance of the quality of life we have worked so hard to develop? Yes, John, the associa- tion does have a vendetta - but NOT against the Town of Whitby. Our vendetta is against irresponsible develop- ment! And when you attempt to cram 42% of the total allowable popu- lation on 29% of the land I suggest THAT'S irres- ponsible developrMent, perhaps even immoral. It's too bad that you saw fit not to attend the Whitby Planning Board's public meeting on Thurs- day, June 12th. It was standing room only. You could have witnessed your neighbours (those people who elected you - remember? ) voice their opinions, concerns and suggestions for improved development plans. This meeting was a prime example of participatory democracy. The old line politics won't work any- more, John - this is 1975; the electorate no longer has blind faith in it's elected representatives, and I suggest that the representatives them - selves are responsible for this new awakening. The record speaks for itself. Whitby is in debt, and this is most unfortunate, -to say the least -but don't use the Ratepayers Association as scapegoats for the mismanagement we have been subjected to. We won't be intimi- dated. We won't abdicate our responsibilities to our own families, nor to those who will move into the area. We will not sacrifice our futures for a short-term gain for Whit- by. Brick and mortar monuments are not as important to us as our families' futures. We recognize too, the "divide and conquer" tactics that have been used, Le. advising one group that they will get sewers only when lot levies are realized from a development that, in its present plan, is totally opposed to existing zon- ing by-laws. No doubt some will buy these tactics, but I have faith that the majority of area residents are far too intelligent to be taken in by such manoeuvers. Relative to Whitby's need for funds, I ask that while PERHAPS a new municipal building is required, do we need it before we can afford it? Perhaps an addition to the existing facility would be a more econo- mically sound move at this time, and the two million dollars allotted for this project could be diverted to the provision of sewers, where required. Maybe we need a new ice pad - but before we can afford the $700,000 required for its construc- tion? Attendance at various out-of-town con- ventions is no doubt beneficial to town councillors - but can we afford any more such excursions this year? Then there's the matter of building and trans- porting a float to St. Catharines - a move that required a public apology on the part of Whitby - not exactly a worthwhile expenditure was it? I could go on, John, but l'm sure you get the picture. The Corridor Area Ratepayers Associa- tion isn't the cause of the town's ills. The real cause is the unresponsive, illogical judgements on the part of the admini- stration.- Yours truly, Cathy Jubenville, 9 Dymond Drive, Whitby, Ontario. Police are understanding Dear Sir; A few days ago we had occasion to request the help of the Durham Region Police in locating a seven-year old daughter who was more than four hours overdue returning from school. We would like to publicly thank the Police Department and in parti- cular those officers in- volved, for their efforts, their genuine concern and understanding, and most of all for the quick action in response to our call for help. Fortunately this ended happily, but it is good to know that we have such help at the other end of the telephone. Yours truly, Enid & George Church 505 Byron St. South Whitbv. Ontario Taxpaying entertainer asks why Bowmanville drivers? Dear Sir; As q taxpayer in the tcwn of Whitby for the past 11 years, and an en- tertainer of senior citizens as leader of the Whitby Greenh6rins who freely give of their time and talents and a capable licensed bus driver, I would like to ask public- ly of the Whitby Recrea- tional Director Mr. Wayne Deveau and his advisor Mrs. Joy Thomp- son - why they hired Bowmanville bus drivers instead of Whitby bus drivers to transport Whit- by Senior Citizens during their special week. Dorothy Lqnsdale, 211 Crawforth Street, Whitby, Ontario. Thank yôu, Mike =t77lJý:.7 Ï'M'
