If you -keep your eyes alert you'see some rather strange things or happenings as you drive around on the job. Street signs often contradict themselves leaving the poor driver rather in doubt as to just what to do. I've often wondered if the same roads crew instalied both set of signs. And there really doesn't appear to be- a set policy. It's almost as if the road crew had X number of signs to install for the month and they just put- them up whenever the mood arose. Many four way intersections have a stop sign on each corner while others do flot only have no stop signs but no yield signs either. It's these contradictions in iife that 1 t.hink makes life Your Bicycle Dealer AND SPORT. CENTRE Downtown Whitby Brock St. ire Hallm Nieuwendyks' U106 Coîborne St., E. PUC UNE- bea ra ble when the pressure of exlisting ln today's double speed world gets -to you. 1 remember drlving along in a pouring rain stormi about five weeks ago thinking how miserable Spring w'as turning out and the tempera'ture was only in the iow SOs and A of a sudden 1 gazed to the left and there in a parking lot and field was a travelling carni- val! ,It was preposterous that this gaudy, noisy collection of rides and amusements'fshould even be set up so early in the year and even more ridiculous to think that it would not only be there but operating in a pou ring, freezing rain'storrn. There were no customers that 1 could see and the atten- dants ýhad each found a spot to huddie under sheltering themselves from the ramn. To this day V've often wondered wliether it Àras finaneially worth it for the company to be operating that early in the year but who can predict the whims of man. While I was amused at finding a travelling carnivai set up s0 early in the year it's discovery took me back to many enjoyable sumnmer hours spent not only at the county Town Carnival but at other smnall town fairs which I had been to during the hot summer. 1, think statistics wil*bear me out that we used to have longer, hotter sumrmers than we have had in the past seven or eight years but this summer is shapmng up to be just such a summer. With those hot sumrmers came the fairs and carnivais that filied a summer with memories that lasted long after summer's heat. Memories of candy fluff spun on a machine by an attendant whose face and hair were covered with a gauze of multicoloured fluff and whose powdery hands worked quickiy to produce a downy pink delicacy eagerly snatched up by smnail chiidren. Woe to the unwary passerby who chanced too close to a child with candy cotton because in a flash it Wouid be partiaiiy transferred fromn stick to clothing sometirnes not to be discovered until bedtimne. 1 remember summer fairs as warm soft drin k and almost cold, partially cooked hamburgers - both paid for with exhorbitant sums of money. The hamburg would be smothered with cheap fried onions that would be with you for days. But somehow those things were part of the carni- val.atniosphere as were the young men struggling through the midway just barely holding an assortment, of stuffed bears, rabbits, snakes, skunks, and frogs in some of the wildest and unsuitable colours imnaginable. Tightly clutched to the arms of these young men would be teenaged girls obviously proud of the achieveinent of their young men. It mattered to neither boy nor girl that the price he paid to win those stuffed anin'als in a game of 'skill' was probably four times more than he would have paid had he just bought themn from a discount or department store. Mixed ln with the, cheap imitations of Canadian 'souvenirs made anywhere but ln Canada and sold by the carnivai would'be the local made bven niltts, aprons, baby clo thes, place' matts and dried flower arrangements. 1 have often marveiled at how much work and detail went into the making of a hand knit book mark or oven mitts and yet how reasonable in price they were. 1 will often buy such goods as'gifts and 1 feel guilty paying such a low price because- 1 know the aimount of time and love involyed. So as 1 sat there at an intersection in Toronto waiting for the stop light to turn green ail these pleasant- thoughts came into my mind of summer fairs and- gaudy carnivals with their noisy rides and cotton candy and 1 suddenly smiled and thought to myself, "It won't be long before it's time for the Whitby County Town Carnival!"'
