WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1975, PAGE il TWINNING TOWNS SPORTS EXCHANGE Whitby peewees top counterparts from Longeueil A busload of 21 swimmers and 16 baseball players, their coaches and Whitby Recrea- tion Department representa- tives' travelled to Longueuil, Quebec for the second por- tion of the Whitby-Longueuil Sports Exchange recently. One month ago, Whitby hosted the Longueuil group during County Town Carni- val Week, with Whitby famil- ies billeting the 35 youngsters who joumeyed from Quebec. The language difference didn't appear to create any stumbling block for the young baseball players and swimmers. With a common love of sports and games, communicaton came easily. Following a 7-6 victory and a 6-5 loss to Longueuil during Whitby's County Town Carnival, the Whitby Peewee baseball Selects journeyed to Longueuil for the final two games. The opening game was similar to the first two games in Whitby and ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Stephen Parrot. of Whitby and D. Casgrain for Iongueuil pitched excel- lent games, both allowing six hits and striking out eight batters. Longueuil started out agressively, running at every opportunity, but Whitby kept cutting them down on the basepaths. Clayton Tay- lor tried to get something going in the top of the third when he singled, stole second but was called out when he tried to steal third. In the bottom of the fourth, Long- ueuil broke the ice scoring two runs on three successive hits. Things looked bleak for Whitby, but they started back in the top of the fifth, when Steve Parrot lead off with a base hit, stole second and moved to third when Tom Magna* grounded out. Doug Dean brought Steve Parrot home with a line drive single to centrefield. In the top of the sixth, Whitby had their backs to the wall. With two out, Larry Bingley sin- gled, stole second and third and came home on Charlie Meitner's second hit of the game. Longueuil threatened in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and a runner on third, Steve Parrot struck out the last batter to preserve the tie. The second encounter started badly for Whitby as they fell behind 4-0 after two innings. Their hosts had shown them too good a time, as mental errors and erratic pitching put them behind the eight-ball. According to Recreation Director Wayne De Veau, "the Recreation Department has been working in close cooperation with the Whitby Girls' Athletic Association since its concéption." He said that "162 girls have been registered in soft- ball and it is the intent of this association to develop other girls' sports." "Endorsing this program for future grant requests would assist this group in its function. However, there arë no monies in the 1975 budget", Mr. De Veau said.
