Durham West caindidates on hot'seat Whitby cable television subseribers will have two opportunities to hear two of the candidates from the rid- ing of Durhami West answer pertinent questions of this current provincial election campaign. New Democratic Party candidate Charles Godfrey and Liberal hopeful Des Newman were put to the test by members of the local media, including Free Press Publisher/Managing Editor Mike Burgess, during an ai- most-all-candidates forum, organized by Maclean-Hunter Cable T.V. Lirnited. Bill Pilkington, running on the Progressive Conservative ticket, did not, participate. According to moderator Warren Potter, party officiaIs did not feel that the stations which will1 air the show do not have sufficient audiences to warrant Mr. Pilkington's presence. Whitby and Oshawa view- ers can see the one-hour show at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept- ember il or 7 p.m. on Mon- day, September 15 over Pine Ridge Cable T.V. Ajax residents get their chance tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. or Tuesday at 9 p.m. over Maclean-Hunter Cable T.V. Pickering voters can watcl the program at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday, or Tuesday September 16 over Bay Ridges Cable T.V. Voters will get several chances within the next week to farn iliarize themselves with the candidates in thie provincial election race in Durham West. The first of the ail can- didates forums planned for this week goes tonight at 9 p.m. in the Harwood Second- ary School in Ajax. The second is scheduled for tomorrow night at 9 in the Dr. Robert Thornton School on Hazelwood Road in Whitby. It has been organ- ized by the Corriidor Area Ratepayers Association. The forum will be moderated by Cathy Jubenville and wil allow each candidate seven minutes to speak ýand five minutes to rebut opponent's comments. Written questions will be accepted flrom the floor and will be sèreened by .a panel, chaired by Free Press Publisher/Managing Editor Mike Burgess. Another forum will, be held September 8 in Ash- burn, beginning at 8:30 p.mn. The final one of the week is slated for September 10 in the Centennial Building in Whitby beginning at 9 p.m. It has been organized by the Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation. Vol. 5 No. 35 Wednesday, September 3, 1975 Ten Cents BLAZE! A Sunday morning fire gutted the home of Gord White to the tune of an esti- mated $65,000. The fire at the house located on Whitby sideroad 28/29 about one mile south of Ashbum was spotted by near by neigh- bours about 1:13 a.m. The Whitby Fire Department" responded with two trucks. from each of the three halls and a total of 25 men. The fire, already blazing through the roof, was brought under control -in about two and one-hif hours, but it was five and one-haif hours be- fore the firefighters, led by Deputy-Chief Ron ýHawkins,' managed to leave the scene. The fire is believed to have been caused by improper wiring creating an overload on the circuits, and is esti- mated to have been burning about four hours before it was reported. he White's were not at home at the tuiie and no iâiuries were reported.
