PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22,1975, WHITBY FREE PRESS Photography is proving to be an excellent outlet for kids of today Photography is today's me- dium for today's kids. In fact, kids are really turning on to the world of images. The world as seen through the viewfinder of a camera is a very specidl one which can re- late to each person's particu- lar vision or way of seeing. But more than that, taking pictures and seeing them right away, is just plain fun! Fortunately, today's youth are turning away in droves from the harmful avenues of escape which were so earn- estly sought in the sixties. Instead, hobbies of all kinds, participatory sports, recrea- tional sports activities and party games are once again popular and nostalgia in many forms (music, clothes, books, old photographs) reigns su- preme. Picture-taking is proving to be an excellent outlet. Seeing the world from behind the lens of a camera provides teenagers with the wider out- look they seek. The camera, because of its quick response to the mind and to the ima- gination, can serve as a power- ful medium to dispel feelings of claustrophobia and provide the needed release from pent- up frustrations. their youth. A camera, of course, enables anyone to capture on film forever ail of the memorable people and occasions in hir or her life which otherwise would gradually fade in their memory: relatives, friends children, pets, parties, games, away at school, vacation, hol- iday events, outings, get to- gethers of all sorts, and count- less other occasions. But where to begin - while any simple-to-use camera will do - what bette.rway to start than with an instant picture camera which allows you to see and enjoy your pictures on-the-spot immediately after you have taken them. A fa- vourite choice for kids is Pol- aroid's new Electric Zip which cones in three vibrant colours - red, white and blue, and weighs just 25 ounces: Electric zip uses the low-pri- ced square format, eight-expo- sures Type 88 (75 Speed) and Type 87 (3000 Speed) Land film packs for colour pictures in one minute and coaterless black-and-white pictures in thirty seconds. The camera has a built in flasheube socket which accepts either standard four-shot flashcubes or hi-po- wer cubes. grow up, they will remember gone by because they are re- PoaroidCalmctrec Zip Land When these youngsters what they did on lallowe'ens cording their activities on a Camera. The effect of picture-taking in arousing the power of self- expression and sheer fun and enjoyment is spreading to other areas as well. One area of particular note is the ap- preciation of photography as an art form. Young Canadian photographers are fast be- coming known through their portfolios and books of pho- tographs, photo posters, photo exhibitions and photo publi- cations. Because of the intense inter- est in photography as a means of expression, courses in pho- tography have been prolifera- ting*in high schools and col- leges across Canada. Photo- graphy can, in fact, be a lifelong pursuit, as we know from observing such great photographers as Ansel Adams of the United States and Yousuf Karsh of Canada, both of whom have been actively taking photographs since For most youngsters instart photography is magic. For their first experience with the camera, they can create some- thing, capture an image that is theirs to share. The process is simple: see and select what to photograph, isolate the to photograph, isolate the object with the camera's eye frame ihe object by visually cropping it, then press the shutter button, and pull the tab. The immrediacy of the instant process allows evaluation of the photo on-the-spot so that the object or scene can be reshot until he or she is com- pletely satisfied with a photo- graph. However, because young people quickly become at ease and uninhibited be- hind the lens of a camera, first-time shots frequently re- sult in fresh joyous new see- ing of their world.
