In seven years the depart- ment has risen [rom an hionorable mention status, ho first in Ontario for its popu- lation category of 25,000 ho 100,000, and thiird of ail [ire departinents in Canada, re- gardless of population category. hlie perf'ormance of the rire department during the past year is' judged from a scrapbook on the depart- mient's activities, which is pie- pared by Platoon Chief Ken Corner, and subm-itted to the NFPA ah Boston in mnid- November. The resuits of the contest are announced tie following February. Platoon Chiief Corner secs two major achievements of 1975 as placing Whitby in a goôd position for hiigh honors in tie contest again this year. Durîig tie year the fire dcpartmcnt complcted a 100 per cent ispection of A buildings in the town--residen- tial, commercial, industrial, and institutional. This is thc first tirne, he says, that suchi a comprehensive inspcction program hlas been achieved. Also, tie MWitby Fire Departmient was the first in Canada to hire- fenale students during thie summer. Mie three girls selected were responsible for- a portion of die inspection prograni. Four boys werc also hiired as sumi- mier students. During 1975 the Whitby ire departrnent added a water tank truck and two pumpers to its equipment, and parti- cipated in parades at Whitby, Bowmanvillc, Uxbridgc, and Thorold. IL also presented fire prevention displays at the World Plowing Match and County Town Carnivai trade fair. The Junior Fire Department prograni was attended by 160 local youngsters, adn added a demonstration of grease fires to iLs activities. Fifty people graduated frorn the aduit fire prevention course, and 1 20 people attended a St. John Ambulance first aid couïse sponsored by die fic dCl)a r tme nt.,, Thuis ycar, the Whitby Fire Departmient increascd its involvernent in the com- munity with speeches to ser- vice clubs, and school classes [romn as far away as Cobourg and Haliburton toured the fic hall. Platoon Chief Ken Corner of the Whitby Fire Department is busy pasting down pictures in a scrap book which will be entered in the National Fire Protection Associatiofl's annual fire prevention contest. The_ book records the accomplish- ments of the Wbitby Fire Department during the past year, and is judged along wîth entries from across Canada. Last year Witby was ranked the third-place fire departmeflt in the country.
