Just ask the Whitby Warriors. In a Thursday evening Soccer As Ontario Hockey Association Senior 'A' game at Iroquois Parkç Arena, the Warriors found out. The game, billed as the battie for first place, saw the Warriors open withi just 14 ssoiation players, their roster depleted by players injuries or work coînmitments. As a resuit, Whitby found themnselves on the bottomn end of a 6-1 score in the only contest they played last week. After Barrie's Doug Acomb opened the scoring at 3: 10 of the flirst period,.Gord McCosh tied the score at 9:07 when his long slapshot deflected off a Flyer defenceman. The visitors scored the winning goal at 19:39 on a power- pl ay after missing several good opportunities with, the man advantage. Du'ring a scrarnble in front of the net, Barrie's Piîl Branston poked the puck uinder goalie Brian Wilson. 1The Flyers outshot the Warrlors 15-11I in' the first period. Barrie got its first of four insurance goals on the even- ing's prettiest play at 3:08 of the second period.. Bill Abbot, along the boards, fired a pass to Don Pagnutti, at the crease edge, who tipped the puck over the sliding Whitby ne tminder. The Flyers then scored at 11:50, a goal which should neyer have been. Doug Acomb was a facéoff in the Warrior's zone, waltzed in untouched and slipped a low backhand shot under Brian Wilson's glove. He left the game at that point lan did not return. Barrie outshot Whitby 11-6 in the second period. Barrie's fifth goal, at 3:51 of the final period, typified the frustration Whit- by goalie Brian Wil son experience thoughout the contest. As he. stretched in the crease to smother a looSe puck, a Warrior defenceman kicked it out of his glove onto the stick of Barrie's Gary Lyte, who suid it into the empty net. Don Pagnutti scorcd his second and the Flyers' flinal goal of the game at 5:26 as hc poked a rebound past Brian Wilson. The, defencc's inability to clear rebounds probablY cost the Warriors the game.. Whitby's tough defence- man Clavin Pettit entered the game midway through the final period and levelled Barrie captain Corby Adams with the hardest check of the night. The Flyers outshot the 10-6 in the final period, for a game total of 36-23. Whitby plays host to the Lindsay Lancers at Iroquois Park Arena tomorrow night at 8:30.
