WHITBY FREE PRESS Paralyzed patients benefit from hospital auxiliary gift Patients paralysed or sut- fering from strokes will benefit considerably from the latest gift to the Dr. J. O. Ruddy Hospital from the hospital's Ladies' Auxiliary. The gift, which lias been in use for about three months, is a patient lifter, called Ambulift, made in England at a cost of about $1,400. The Ambulift is a chair apparatus which is raised and lowered on a moveable stand, so a patient can be lifted out of bed without using cumber- some slings or bedsheets. It enables a patient who is paralysed to have a tub bath or a shower, for the Ambulift can carry the patient from his bed and lower hini safely into the tub. It also is designed so it can lower a patient from his bed VOTE onto a commode chair, and has equipment to keep the patient's legs extended when required. Accorditt to the hospital Administrator John Kunetsky, the Ambulift saves- nurses from injuring their backs when lifting patients, provides more comfort for the patients, and boosts the patient's morale by enabling him to have tub baths, some have tub baths, something that was not possible without the Ambulift. It is also useful in lifting patients whô have fallen on the floor or require assistance in being noved. Moveable arm guards on the Ambulift prevent the patients from falling off, and two nurses are on duty when it is being used. The nurses of the hospital saw a demonstration ot the Ambulift at the Ontario Hospital Association conve- ntion in October 1974, and wanted one for the hospital. it is one of a number donations made by Ladies' Auxiliary since hospital opened in 1970. Nursing Orderly George Kollaard and Nurse Arlene Doidge demonstrate the "Ambulift" patient lifter recently donated to the Dr. J. O. Ruddy General Hospital by the hospital's Ladies' Auxiliary. The Ambulift enables paralysed patients to be lifted easily, and to have tub baths. Free Press Photo PROPERTY FOR SA£L 'Me Du rh am Board of EducationD will sel the follow- ing property by tender.
