Forty parents of children now in Grades four and five at Florence Heard met at the school last week to voice their objections to proposed the move, which was announced in a letter from the Durham Region Board of Education. Mrs. Don Nicholls, whose husband chaired the meeting, said that parents were con- cerned because 30 grade six children would be put into a school containing 432 grade sevens and eights, and "wouldn't have a chance" in sports and "would be picked on". She said the parents did not like the grade sixes being outnumbered 10 to one by the older children, and pro- duced a petition asking that the grade sixes of next fall be allowed to remain at Florence Heard School. The petition was signed by 38 parents of grade three, four and five children, and only two parents were in favor of the proposed move, said Mrs. Nicholls. She said the pétition will be sent to other parents affected and will be forwarded to Stan Finbow, superinten- dent of program for Whitby, who will p'esent it to the Durham Region Board of Education for consideration. Mr. Finbow, who attended the parents' meeting, said that the board would consider keeping the grade sixes at Florence Heard school if a good proportion of the parents involved opposed the move to the Senior Public School. He said at the meeting that the board had been thinking of adjusting numbers of children in the schools, but he agreed with the parents that the ratio of grade sixes was too small in the proposal. He pointed out however, that the Board of Education had expected that the num- bers would be increased by the addition of children from the Bradley Farm subdivision, but he did not know how many would be attending the senior school and when. Mrs. Marjorie Mclntyre, one of Whitby's two school trustees, who also attended the meeting, said the situation was quite flexible, and there was no need for the Grade sixes to move this year if the parents objected. She said the proposai to move the Grade sixes to the senior public school would have to be reviewed in a Carnival annual meeting Feb. 4 The annual meeting of the County Town Carnival com- mittee will be held at the Centennial Building Fe b. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Officers for 1976 will be elected, a theme chosen for this year's carnival, and reports made on the 1975 carnival. All organizations wishing to take part in the carnival in 1976 are asked to send a representative to this meeting. public Ontario MPORTANT DATE CHANGES Key rent review deadlines for LANDLORDS and TEN- ANTS have been extended as of January 16, 1976.
