WHITîIY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1976, PAGE, 15 30,0< One 'of the most expensive and difficult types of fires to figlit in-Whitby in recent years occurred last week at Art Robinson's auto wrecking yard on Tauinton Road West as 30,000 tires went up in smoke. The fire first erupted at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after two boys who were dismant- ling a, car threw a gas tank which had ignited fromn sparks from a cutting torch onto a pile of tires. The result was a fire which )0 ti*res gg burned for more than î,ý hours, sending clouds of dense black smoke more than 150 feet into the air. For a while there was fear that the dense srnoke would force a closing of the Oshawa airport, as visibility for incoming planes was obscured. Between 30 and 35 fire- fightêrs and seven trucks from Whitby, backed up by units from Oshawa and Ajax were at the scene, and it was estimated that more thanj 85,000 gallons of water were o ,upin smoke poured on the fire. At the carnival committee's annual meeting last Wednes- day, John McIvor who has been first assistant general chairman for many years, was elected as general chairman, and Mr. Woodward was elected to the new position of executive director. Mr. Woodward suggested to the committee that an executive director's position be created because the carnival has become so large an operation that the general chairman does not have the timne to do al the executive functions. The executive director, he said, would be like an office manager. He suggested the general chairman would oversee the carnival, and the executive director would be responsible for the day-to-day operation. He also suggested that in future years the executive director could move up, to the ge neral chairni? îi's job. In past years, szad Mr. Woodward, the general chair- man and two or three other people have done ail the administrative work, but the carnival has grown to the point where some changes in the executive are required. The election of officers resulted in the following positions being filled: First Assistant Chairman, Ken Corner, Second- Assistant Chairman. George Hea th; Secretary-Treasurer, Mildred Woodward; and Directors, John Goverde, Berny Bris- sette, John Boniello, Brian Winter,' Gord Wick, Claude Schembri, Ken Bird, Mandy Crawford, John Town Jr. and a representative of the Wcst Lynde Community Associa- tion. The carni*.al comrnittee gave a vote of thianks to Mr. Woodward for his work as general chairmani since the carnival's inceptioni in 1966, and voted in favor of creating the new executive. director's p)ositionl as part of the 1976 execuWie.
