WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1976, PAGE 9 Fire departmént anniversary is carnival theme The 125th anniversary of thc Whitby Fire Dçpartment will be the thenk of the 1976 County Town Carnival. At its annual meeting last Wednesday, the County Town Carnival committee decided that the fire department should take the honors this year, and a slogan will be Spicked at the next carnival meeting. Although the Royal Canadian Legion is celeboat- ing its 50th anniversary this year, it decided to give way to age, and let the fire department set the theme for the carnival, since it is 125 years old. The dates for this year's County Town Carnival are July 23 to Aug. 2, with the Ontario Fire Fighters' Asso- ciation convention being from July 30 to Aug. 2 at Brooklin. Jack Woodward, executive director of the carnival for 1976, said he was pleased to see the Fire Fighters' conven- tion at Brooklin, for it will Brooklin Bylines cont'd from Page 6 actions, then please get in touch. "Brooklin will really be on the map after the con- vention", promised Mr. Visser. In addition to the Fire Fighters' convention, there may be another special attraction at this year's carnival. Mr. Woodward reported that the carnival committee has applied to have the Wintario draw at Iroquois Park July 22, and that the Ontario government will give the committee's application consideration. He also reported that the carnival has received a 10 per cent increase in its grant from the Town of Whitby, which will be $6,600 this year. A number of ideas for the 1976 carnival were expressed at the annual meeting of the carnival committee last Wednesday. An Ajax man proposed a semi-professional bicycle race if the carnival committee can supply some funding, and the Chamber of Commerce sug- gested moving its Peter Perry Award night so it will not conflict with the trade fair as it has in past years. The Kinsmen Club has again offered to organize the parade, which will be held on July 31, and wants more participation from industry. The Kinsmen also offered to produce the program again, and this will be taken under consideration at the next meeting of the committee. . Gord Wick, of the Brook- lin Horticultural Society sug- gested that the flower show could be moved to the February 29th is the deadline for many important pro- cedures under the Rent Review Act. " For tenancy agreements taking effect on or after July 30, 1975 and up to and including December 31, 1975, TENANTS wishing to dispute increases up to eight per cent for that period must make application on the appropriate form by February 29, 1976. " For tenancy agreements taking effect on or after July 30, 1975 and up to and including December 31, 1975, LANDLORDS wishing to charge more than eight per cent over the rent charged during the last full month prior to August1, 1975, for the above period, must make application on the appropriate form by February 29,1976. " If the LANDLORD and TENANT have not agreed by January 17, 1976 on the prescribed form for a rent increase above the eight per cent guideline, and do not apply to have the rent for that period reviewed, the TENANT is entitled to a rebate of any rent paid in excess of eight per cent by February 29, 1976. " if the LANDLORD fails to refund excess rent by Febru- ary 29, the TENANT is entitled to apply to the Rent Review Office for a payment order. If the LANDLORD still does not comply, the TENANT may deduct the Iroquois Park Arena if some money could be provided for back drops. The committee said it would take this matter under consideration. The Malta Social Club reported that it did not have enough money to take its winning float to the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival at St. Catherines last year, and The Whitby Branch of the Canadian Bible Society wishes to thank all the people who helped in any way to make its 1975 walk and bikeathon a success. The goal for the walka- thon was $3,000 and receipts went over the top, totalling $3,328.91. The total amount suggested the carnival com- mittee provide some funding in addition to the grant from the town for this purpose. Duncan Travel reported it will again be offering a trip for two as the first prize for the carnival queen contest. Mr. Woodward said that the 1975 carnival was the best ever. "Every year Walkathon surpa oi money gent trom- the Whitby Branch to Toronto for 1975 was $4,972.39, the second highest year since the society's first walk in 1970. The money will be used for 'Bibles translated into Portuguese and Chokwe to be sent to Angola in Africa. The Bible Society's Spring Rally will be held on outdoes the year before", he said. He reported that the fireworks display was the best ever held, the trade fair was better than in 1974, and the downtown merchants parti- cipated for the, first time to a good degree in the carnival. The next meeting of the carnival committee will be March 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Building. sses goal March 10 at 8 p.m. in the Enmanual Reform Church 405 Rossland Rd. . W., Whitby. The evening will include two filmstrips on Bible Society work in Poland and Czechoslovakia. The 1976 walk and bikeathon will be held on Sept. 25, with a goal of $3,500. agreed sum from future rental payments. * The maximum rent LANDLORDS may charge tenants after January 1, 1976 for all tenancy agreements which became effective on or after July 30, 1975 is eight per cent more than the rent charged during the last full month prior to August 1, 1975. Unless the landlord has obtained the approval of a rent review officer, a landlord collecting more than this contravenes the rent review legislation and may, on summary conviction, be fined up to $2,000. e In respect to tenancy agreements taking effect on or after July 30, 1975 and up to and including April, 30, 1976, LANDLORDS wishing to charge more than eight per cent for any period after January 1,1976 must make application on the appropriate form by February 29,1976. " For tenancy agreements taking effect on or after Jan- uary 1,1976, TENANTS wishing to dispute any increase must make application on the appropriate form by February 29, 1976, or 60 days after receiving a notice of increase, whichever comes last. " LANDLORDS and TENANTS are reminded that appli- cations for rent review must be made to the Rent Review Office for the region in which the premises are located.
