June 5 in Brooklin Springfair planning underway IN F .OR The .Parade which starts off Saturday's events is again being organized by Group '74. The 1976 theme is "The Olympics" and prizes will be awarded to the most original, most beautiful, most humor- ous, and most representative of theme. Any group wishing to enter a float should call Mrs. Catherwood, 655-3646, and any other parade inquiries will be answered by Mrs. Crangle, 655-3750. The day will be filled with numerous activities and exhibits, including the Ontario' Humane Society's Mutt Show, and the Ken Jen Petting Zoo. The day will end with a dance in the Arena organize d by Group '74.. Plans for the 1976 Brooklin Spring Fair are once again underway. The Fair will be held as usual at the Brooklin memorial Arena and Park on the 5th June. This year, the Fair will not be just a one day event, as directors of the Fair Board are busy planning events for the two evenings prior to the 5th. - The Brooklin and District Kinsmen have been approach- ed to undertake the organizing of a beer tent that will be open both the Thursday and. Friday evenings as well as the Saturday. And the Midway, too, will be open during the same time. Although other evening events have not been finalized at the moment, Thursday night will see the Miss Brooklin Spring Fair Beauty Pageant, (organized as last year by Bob Carson), to be foljowed by a Teenagers' Dance. Friday night events will be of an outdoor nature as the Arena will be the scene of the judging of the many exhibits that will be viewed by the public on the Saturday. Admission will be charged on the Friday, but the same ticket will gain you entrance to the grounds again on Saturday. Thanks to GM children's desk in the Iibrary and stamped at the port of entry (the program room) of each country visited. With this passport, children can travel to Holland, Den- mark, the Ukraine, Malta and Scotland, talk to people from other countries, see costumes and crafts; and enjoy a real travel adventure. Last month there were 2,724 males and 2,649 females registered, compared to 3,271 males and 2,980 females in February 1975. A total of 301 placements were made during February, once again an increase over the comparable month in -1975. Both January and February -placement figures were higher than the corres- ponding months of 1975. General Motors continues to brighten the employment picture in the Oshawa area with announcements of increased hiring plans. Librarians working together Children's services being upgraded Children's librarians in the regions of Peel, York and Durham are working together in an effort to strengthen public library service for the children of these regions. The staff of the Whitby library havie joined a committee of children's librarians made up of represeitatives of Ajax, Aurora, Brompton, Markham, Mississauga, Newcastle, New- market, Oshawa and Rich- mond Hill. The committee has three aims-to improve the range and quality of library service to children, to provide semi- nars, workshops and profes- sional developicnt prograns for children's librarians, and to look at short and long-term developments in children's literature and library programs. The- commnittece iembërs will represent all children's librarians froni the 20 public libraries in the three municipal regions during 1976-77. Co-ordinated by the Central Ontario Regional - Library Systen (CORLS), Richmond Hill, the committee has held one meeting to date. At that meeting-librarians made plans to organize collections of large print books for children as weil as collections of high interest low vocabulary books. They also agreed to co-ordiiate publishers' dis- plays of new children's books, which will be set up at CORLS head office. A teacher of remedial reading will be invited to the next meeting to discuss this aspect of service to children. The committee plans to. meet on the fourth Thursday of each month except March, July, August and December. Chairman of the committee is Aileen Wortley of Mississauga Public Library.
