Do flot cut too short. Water by soaking once a week. Feed your lawn with a good, long lasting fertilizer four times a year. Lightfy rake your Iawn in Spring - to get out dead leaves etc. - in this way, light, food and water can penetrate. In Fali rake your lawn so that the dead leaves do flot form a dense matting. A very thick lawn does flot have many weeds, but a weed killer applied will flot harmn your lawn and will prevent and'weed seeds that might have blown in from germinating. Check your Iawn for insects, chirich bugs, white grubs, ants .... Check your lawri for fungus . . . arnd crabgrass. Re-seed any patch that appears - no matter what time of year - even in the heat of summer - if you are home you can water it. If you have a certain 'path' in your lawn where everyone walks - consider roping it off and reseed- ing, or make a small decorative pathway so thàt your Iawn does flot suffer. You can run across real problem areas, and some- times there is flot too much that you can do. 1. Shade - there are grass seed mixtures that are recommended for the shade, but sometîrnes you find an* area that seems impossible - try then a grourîd cover that likes shade or makes a small patio area in that spot, it could prove to be a great idea when we corne to a heatwave. Sometimes a damp area starts to grow mass and you can be sure that this area needs lime as it has become too acid. We seil lime in the 'powder' type and the granulated type. Many people experience the problem of their lawns under large mnaple trees. Maples are heavy feeders and they take ail the goodness out of the soil and leave none for the grass, and so require extra feedings - by drilling down in the lawn area and filling the holes with slow acting fertilizers to feed their roots, or by using granular feedings direct- ly on the lawn. Maples also produce a lot of shade, 50 having a nice lawn and large mnaples can be quite a job.
