Civic Auditorium April 23 to 25 Locals to entertain Little Ex crowds Whitby residents will1 play a big part in entertain- ing visitors to the Little Ex, an updated version of the former Oshawa Home Show, to be held at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium April 23 to 25. Magician Ted Curl of Whitby, Master of Ceremonies at the recent Sportsmen's Show in Toronto, and the Whitby-biýsed County Town Singers, under the direction of James Ashley, will combine with Canada's C ofC Presiden t Busmness A strong defence of Canadian business was pre- sented April 6 by G. E. Pearson, President of the Canadian Chamber of Com- merce, at a joint meeting of the Durham Region Chambers of Commerce in Oshawa. Representatives of the Chambers of Commerce of Whitby, Oshawa, Bowman- ville, Newcastle, Ajax and Scugog; heard Mr. Pearson's comments on the Royal Commission 'on Corporate Concentration and the Cana- dian Chamber's presentation to this commission. "One of the major barriers to public support for our business systeni is the abysmal lack of economic education in Canada", said Mr. Pearson. He pointed out that the government in its royal commission was embarking on a high profile investiga- tion of corporate power, instead of turning its atten- tion to "oppressive govern- ment" and "irresponsible labor". "It is the view of the Chamber that, in a very real way, business is 'on trial' before judges and jury", he said. "The judges, quite obviously are the commis- sioners. The jury is the Canadian public, since the public welfare must be the fundamental scale of measure- ment for the entire process". Mr. Pearson pointed out that corporate concentration is diminishing in Canada. He cited the fact that in 1933 the 100 largest companies in Canada accounted for 65 per cent of the total capital of all companies while by 1958, this had dropped to 40 per cent and has remained the same. In addition, he said, Canadian Pacific represented only 1.6 per cent of tEe gross national product in 1974, compared to 4.5 per cent in 1910. Sorne observers have theorized that the level of competition in an industry relates directly to the number of competitors, and that the public interest would be best served by having 50, 60 or 100 competitors in each segment of the market, said "r. Pearson. "We told the commission that there is little relation- ship between numbers and the level of competition", he said. "We asked them how the public would be better served by having five, 10 or 20 airlines flying the same Toronto-to-Vancouver route, particularly when we're trying to conserve energy as a national objective!' "One of the most preval- number one ranked women's gymnastics tean, the Winston- ettes of Scarborough, tbree of whom have been cbosen to represent the country in the 1976 sumnier Olympics in Montreal, to give visitors an excuse to take a respite from wandering anmong the many exhibits. Purcbased late last year by a grdup of local businessmen the Little Ex, a three-day exposition of ideas relating to the home. craft and leisure scene, will be open fron 1 to 10'p.m. on April 23 and 25 and from i11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on April 24. Walter Beath, Chairman of Durham Region, will be accompanied by Cathy Dillon, Miss Little Ex, and by Oshawa's Tinmmy for 1976 at the official opening cerenonies at 7 p.m. on April 23. Oshawa Nayor James Potticary will be on hand at the closing of the exhibition on April 25 and, at that time, will make the draws for the major prizes to be awarded. The main prize will be an system defended ent popular myths surrounds the 'big three' automotive companies and their supposed dommfination of the market", Mr. Pearson added. "Why, scream the critics, those three giants have over 70 per cent of the market between them". "We reminded the Royal Commission that any car buyer can choose from products offered by more than 20 different manufac- turers and it is consumers who, by free choice, have given the 'big three' seven out of e.'ery 10 sales", said Mr. Peaizon. "Consumers make that decision, not companies". Mr. Pearson also reminded that Chamber members and the commission that Canada needs botb small and large businesses, that big businesses need and often spawn small ones, and that co-operation and competition do exist between businessesof aillsizes. "In the final analysis",said Mr. Pearson, "corporate concentration, its benefits and liabilities, must be measured on a solid base 'of perfor- mance". He pointed out that workers' incomes are steadily rising in real terms, consumers have a greater quantity and quality of goods available than ever before, and the real cost of products in ternis of hours of declining. On the said the holders in declining work is steadily other hand, lie return to share- businesses is on a trend, nieaning the business system bas benefitted workers and consumers most of all, but not the executives or share- holders. When asked to explain the show's name change,President John Muha said "When we took the show over, it was felt that a new naine would bc in ordcr to reflect the rnuch wider range of the exhibition this year. The old naiendid seem ntoindicate an Oshawa boundary. But there are many more people resident in the area surround- ing Oshawa. We feel that the show will appeal to t ha-t seg- ment of the population as well as Oshawa, as it is intended to reflect the Dur- bain region as a whole rather than just a portion of it". le went on to say "There is no question that the Little Ex is appreciably more diversified than it has been in the past. There will be more exhibitors, over 100 in fact, from a wider area, and the entertainment will be of an extrenely bigb calibre". Mr. Muba and his partners, gencral manager AI Spencer and secretary-treasurer Peter Fraiklin, have been arranging the show since Decernber and have sold most of the exhibitors' booths.
