WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28,ý 1976, PAGE 9 Thik~n Radsies haeidustrial potential By BRIAN WINTER Staff Writer One of the areas in the Durham region with the greatest potential for--indus- trial developmnent is, located in the Town of Whitby but probably few residents have ever seen it or-know where it is. Officially it is called the Whitby-Oshawa hIndustrial Basin, but it is niore popularly known as the Thickson Roa d Industrial Park. The Thickson Road Indus- trial Park is actually flot one, but four industrial parks, owned by four different developers, comprising in total about 500 acres on both sides of Thickson Road south of the CNR tracks. In the late 1960s the Town of Whitby began assembling land in this area and in 1973, before regional government came into effect, the town sold 212 acres to JDS Investments Ltd. of Toronto. Since then, three other developers have assern- bled land in the area, and through the Durham Region's development officer fo r Whitby, Richard Spenice, the lands are being prepared for the establishment of industrial firms in the town. An important feature of the Thickson Road industrial Park, according to Mr. Spence is the projected extensioni of Wentworth Street fr0111 'Oshawa to Thickson Road, xvhich will pass throughi the industrial park and provide a major traffic artery south of Highxvay 401. Already a portion of the Wentvorth extension has been conistruct- ed through the'JDS property. 0f the four industrial parks, two undeveloped tracts of land are located on the west side of Thicksoni Road between the CNR tracks and Lake Ontario. The one closest to the tracks consists of 70 acres owned by Orlando Realty Corporation, of which 40 acres are plowed, flattened The three clients wvhich have moved into the JDS multiple building are Wick Printing Ltd., fornîerly iocated in Col umbus, wliich took two units; Comtech Ltd, a computer programming and accountiî,. lbusiness wvhîch and ý'ready to go", says Mr. Spence. Some fi is required on the remaining portion of the land. The area is an ideal heavy industriai location says Mr. Spence, and the developer is to seil, lease or rent. Immiiediately to the south is a 78-acre tract of land own- ed by Esquire Developmnents, whicli extends to tihe Lake shore. Another heavy industry area, this land is al$o 64ready to go" says Mr. Spence and the developer will sell, lease or build. Sewers and water on Thickson Road can service the sites, and there is rail transportation adjacent to the Orlando lands. On the east side of Thickson Road, immediately south of the CNR tracks is the Tricont Industrial Park, consisting of 76 acres. Ail services have been installed, providing roads, water, sewers, gas, hydro and street lights, says Mr. Spence. Building lias already begun in the Tricont Industrial Park. In the faîl of 1975 a 900,000 square foot parts warehotîse was conîpleted by General Motors, and clients a re considering purchasing of' other sites in the industrial park. The largest of' the four industrial parks is "Lakcview Industrial Esta tes" imnnîediate- ly south of Tricont's land. This is the _21 -a.cre parcel of' land purchiased in 1I973 by JDS lnvestmnents Ltd. The building occupies 110,000 square fee t, and will initialiy employ 60 people, says Mr. Spence. However, he expects the staff will increase in the near future. .On May 20 Fisher Scientific Co. will hold a reception for invited guests, in co-operation withi Tricont Projects Ltd., J DS, the Region of Durham and Town of Whitby. Regional Chairmnan Walter Beath is expected to make a speech on11the occasion.
