The ncw operations centre is located on I1O acres of a 43-acre site on Taunton Road purchased a few ycars ago by the Town of Whitby. The only developrnent on the site tilI last October wvas a sand dorne constructed in 1974. Construction of the S600,000 operations centre began last October, with the design being produced by Totten Simis Hubicki Asso- ciates, and the contractor being Winvalley Construction. Both are Whitby companies. The operations centre will be shared by the works and recreation departmenis. Facilities include a carpen- try shop and storage area for each department, office space, five bays for works depart- ment trucks, two service and repair bays, a vehicle washing bay, and a nechanics and vehicle repair centre. A fenced-in security area wilI provide outside storage for culverts, pipes, gravel, catch basins, drains, manhole covers, guide posts and other equipment used by the works departrnent. According to Mr. Kuwhara, there is roorn for expansion of the 15,000 square foot building as more equipment is obtained and the town grows, and another sand dome can be erected as the need requires. A number of new features not available in the existing works yards, such as hydralie hoists and grease pits in the service bay, will be supplied. The office area will be ocCupied by the works supervisor, lead hands and outside 'workers and the recreâtion department's Iead hand and his crew wiIl also have an office, says Mr. Kuwaha ra. The recreation department will be using the building for repairing picnic tables and' other equipment, and for storing such items as tennis nets, lawn mowers and small tractors. A stock room will be provided for the storage of mechanical parts, signs, hardware, tools and equip- ment for the works depart- ment. Mr. Kuwahara said the site of the works and recreation operations centre xvas chosen because it is central to the works depart- ment's operations and has easy access. The Town works depart- ment is responsible for side- walks, crceks, storrn sewers, sewage treatrnent plants, \vater mains and filtration plants, and sanitary landfill sites. Ar-nong te equîpment to be stored at the new centre are niine gravel trucks which can be converted into sanders and snowplows in the winter, two graders, three three-quarter ton' pickup trucks, two 20-yard garbage packers, two front end loaders, one rubber tired back hoe, a small tractor, a street sweeper, a sidewalk sniow plow and a smnall trac tor.
