PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1976, WHITBY FREE PRESS fBrokin B dines The Brooklin Spring Fair this year is sporting something of a new look. But tho' there will be many new events (which I will dwell on in great detail next week in a special release) there is one event that is fast becoming a favourite. I'm referring to the Fair Dance. For the second time Group '74 will be organising the event. Last year's dance was a great success....if you were there you know that only too well. And this year's dance will be no Keep astride with fashion in our summer casuals. Our selection of eisure wear inciuaes- swimsuits, jeans, & tank tops. FASHIONS 126 126 Brock St. S. Whitby i 668-1266 MON-SAT 9-6 PR! 9 the exception. It will, as usual, be held at the Arena and Earl Brown has been asked to return with his wide variety of music. Tickets will be $7.50 a couple and for this you will get door prizes, spot prizes, bar privilages and and a lunch. Dancing will start at 830 p.m. and will carry on until 1 in the norning. Now if you are very wise you will get your tickets now. This dance is becoming the dance in Brooklin, and more and more people are participating. So book your place now by giving Mrs. Martens a call at 655-4635. She's the lady who has the tickets and she isjust waiting to hear from you. Bob Carson is also waiting to hear from some of you young people. Bob is once again organising the Miss Brooklin Spring Fair Beauty Pageant. And if you took part last year, or went along to watch the proceedings, you know that lie did an excellent job. Well he's all prepared to do an even better job this year. He has arranged to have the event over at the Arena.....gives far more viewing room. The whole of Whitby can turn out to watch.....but it will be a lousy evening if we don't have anything to focus our eyes on. Where have all the fair young ladies gone? Not too far away I trust, because Bob is waiting to hear from you. When are you going to get in touch with him? The Pageant is set for the 3rd of June.... four weeks this Thursday. So let's have some action...let's have Bob's phone ringing off the hook. And families and friends...if you know a very likely contender for the title, then encourage her to enter. The number to call is 65-5-3662. 411 lonierakers Achievement Day for Ontario County South Region will be held on Saturday the 8th May, at the C.E. Building, United Church in Brooklin. Parents and friends of the participants are welcome at 1 p.m. and are invited to attend. I hope all Legion members have marked down Sunday the l6th May. Not just an ordinary meeting, fellows, but your election meeting. Make every effort to attend and cast your vote for the executive thatt you think will do the the greatest good for the Legion. Well dear readers, on the I9th May this column will be celebrating it's second birthday. Yes, for two whole years you have kept me supplied with news and views concerning the North Ward. But this birthday will also see something new...a new phone number. Yours truly is signing off. But the Bylines will continue with a new writer...one who is just as full of enthusiasm as I arn, for a colunn which reflects OUR way of life. I trust you will give her the same co-operation as you have given me. If you do I'm sure that the column will last for many, many more years. I'm here III r youcanget e'0 - M as Simcoe here until next week, but after that you will be calling 655- . Make a note of that number, and don't hesitate to use it. Remember only the number has changed...the contents will be the same...your news. One parting shot. If what 1 read is true, then the policy behind closing the Whitby Police Station stinks. Most taxpayers support restraint in public spending. But when you are told that closing the station will trim $74,000 from the police budget and then are told that $600,000 in the same budget is earmarked for planned expansion in 1978 of another police station, namely Oshawa, then 1 repeat...it stinks. Another example of the Regional system costing far more than it is worth. If you couldn't get to the meeting, then support our own council and write to the chairman of the Durham police commission and let him know what you think of his budget plans. AT A GLANCE. SAT. Take care, LIZ 655-3750 Angry at post office A story in the April 28 Free Press entitled "Address Whitby-bound letters Oshawa" has drawn the ire of at least one Whitby resident. The story dealt with a letter to Whitby Council from C. A. Goulet, Director of the Eastern Ontario Postal Region, explaining the level of postal service in the town and outlining how letters to Whitby homes, even if on The convenience, the speed of installation, the low prices, the years of experience, our famous guarantee; all of the MidasTouches are now available at our sparkling new Midas shop at 227 Simcoe Street.S. Parrott of 215 Reedaire Court in Whitby expressed her anger. Councillor Thompson read the letter at the most recent council meeting. "I am infuriated to learn... that we have become a sub- post office of Oshawa", wrote Mrs. Parrott. "This is parti- cularly interesting to me because of the following incident". "During the week preced- ing Easter I was mailing an Easter card to a friend in Whitby", she said. "Not knowing the postal code, I went in to the post office to obtain this information and was told - and I quote "Don't worry about it, we don't use the code anyway", unqtote!" Mrs. Parrott continued "It would be interesting to know, under these circum- stances, where a letter addressed to a resident of Mary Street in Whitby would end up if Mr. Goulet's instructions were followed as it being 'immaterial to us if some customers use one way or another'." "Let us, for heaven's sake, fight for our identity", she pleaded. "My husband and I have just been residents of Whitby since '67, but we love it. We chose Whitby - not Oshawa. Action, please!" Mrs. Thompson would like other people who have complaints about the postal service to let council know about them before council meets with Norm Cafik who will soon be our MP. A ffleck speakinq Bruce Affleck, Durham Region's Crown Attorney, will be the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Whitby Chamber of Com- merce, Monday at noon at the Hatch House.
