It is even more rare when the people of a community thank an industry for doing somnething above and beyond its duties. Well, a major industry in this community has done something which warrants- thanks from- the people of the area. Lake Ontario Steel Company Limited, with its donation of S25,000 toward the cost of the Hutchison Park tennis courts, has added another ini its long list of contributions to the community. For years, LASCO has continuied to support varionis community groups and l)rojects. For that, we thank LASCO on behaif of the people of the community who have benefitted from the company's continuing involvement in the commutnity. Angry prîest asks: "Who Sir: Who in Durham gives a damn about what happens to non-presti- n Durham gious people? Certainly îîot some in our varions layers of bureaucrats, who speak kindly :ts lonig as a coffee-break is not interrupted. and do lit tic. Yon guossed It. dear editor. This old priest is gooct andti a(l, and I arn gives Li rging that ai niiînc lor this Region, in intelIigenýtcaring îîerson who packs a punch. T 'le Ifacts are simple. A decent wîdow o l' 1lini ited(I neans owns a home In Pickeri ng in a fiat and jîl-draineci area. Recently a neiglîbour to the west raiscd his lot level by dumping earth and c thus threw more water on lier lot. The bouse on th-e cast is higher, fairly recently built and is ownecl by the Provincial Govern- meCnt. The road is theconcern of Durhamn ,egion. It has poor drainage. The stagnant water accumnu- laing on the lacly's lot. should be the concern of the various layers of health people .also. The excess water leaked into the hanse basernent. My widow' friend spent a sacrificial $2,300 to get her basement water- proofed with partial success. < The main problern rernains - stag- nîant water in abundance. Some health people apparently took a look - no action. A friend called the local provincial M.P.P. His secretary a damn9 called Maintenance Man- ager- and forgot about it. That's where 1 caine in. The Durham Region Maintenance Managerwas coLrteous and got one of bis foremen to go with mle to the site. The foreinan was fine - said they were short-handed but would deepen the ditchi and try to run soinie of the water off by the end of the week. Ba-,d weather intervened but ultinîately they did what they said they woLIld do. It helps a bit but doesn't solve the problem. 1 had a discussion with the Pickering Town Clerk. He sent mle to the 1ýy-law Dept., who looked into the matter and said there was no by-law to prevent people- from lIetting mun-off go on someone else's land. Thie lady should sue. No explanation of under whiat law. No on(- really cared. 1 received the impression thiat thiere were more chiiefs than Indians -- lots of people to do the paper work and enjoy coffee breaks. The tax depart- ment did not fail to colleet taxes. Thiere are apparently too few people actually working at the problemrs of taxpayers and it is time there was someone to ýassist us simple folk to wade through the bureaucracy to find a respon sible person - time for anl ombudsman 1 would think - a littie less P.R. and a bit more practical service, caring about and following up pro blems. It doesn't seemn able to tell the difference between Whitby, Ontario, Canada, and Wlitby, YorkshirejEngl and. The Whitby (Ontario) Chamber of Commerce receive che envelope pictured above, on May 18. It was mailed on May 1l from Whonnock B.C., and clearly addressed to the Chamber of Commerce of Whitby, Yorkshire England. Who knows whalt the post office will do for an encore? Perhaps somebody should send the postmaster an atlas of world geography, but don't mail it; it may end up in Timbuctoo. Free Press Photo Send letters to: Box 206, Wh itby q -l
