Merchants chcdk up their f irst season win' The Whitby Merehants of the Eastern Ontario Basebali Association Senior division chalked up their first win, of the yoting season Saturday, edging the Bowrnanville Electrons 4-3. However, the Merchants had the thrill of victory quickly erased when they dropped an 11-1 decision to the Eleetons on Sunday. by GORD FORRESTER Strong pitching by Dave Allan gave the Merchants their first victory before a home crowd of approximately 75 people. He struck out eight batters and issued only one walk in nine innings. lie also had- two base hits and two bases-on-balîs, giving him a perfect day at bat. The Merchants opened the scoring in the third inning wvhen Allan had a base hit and Mike Rowley drewv a base on balîs. Gary Borchuk singled and scored two runs. Bownianville scored three ru ns in the seven th. Whitby tied it up in the Craigen singled to score Steve Sarginson. In the ninth inning, the Merchants used the designated pinch-hitter George Yates who drew a base on bails. Jamie Moore got on base on a fielder's choice and Dave Alan drew a walk. The bases were loaded when Bowmanville pitcher John Cambell hi': Steve Sarginson to force in the winning run. In the 11 -1 loss on Sunday, host Bowmanville scored two runs in the third inning, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in'the seventh before Whitby got on the scoreboard. Free Press Photo New basebail diamond ready by end of Jurie >By tie end of June, Whtby's basebail players should have another diamond ready for use. Construction is proceeding on a new baseball diamond in the north east corner of the playing field north of the .Iroquois Park parking lot, to be used by the Whitby Merchants and older players in the minor basebal association. This is the beginning of the minor sports field in Iroquois Park, says Deputy Recreation Director Fred Beckette. Eventually, the sports facilities wilI include a softball diai-ond, six tennis courts and two soccer fields.
