PAGE 9 Deadlocked with Stouffville Novice Whitby Puckrins climb into first-place tie The Whitby Puckrins climbed back into a first place tie with Stouffville Bells by defeating the Bells 9-6 in Lakeshore Novice acti6n. Marion Verkuyl led her team to victory with a double and two singles in three at bat, and pitched a five-hitter, striking out and allowing two walks. Darlene Wagg for Stouffville struck out 10 allowed six hits and walked two. Cathy Allin slammed Peewees improve in E.O.B.A. The Whitby Dunedins are in the Eastern Ontario Base- ball Association finals against Port Hope with the first game scheduled for E.A. Fairman Park this evening, the second in Port Hope Thursday and a third game if necessary in Whitby on Sunday, and the Whitby Legionaires have pulled off the biggest offset of the local baseball season by leading the E.O.B.A. Pee- Wee finals after going winless throughout the entire season. The Dunedins gained a berth in the E.O.B.A. Midget semi-finals with an impressive 6-0 win in the third and deciding game of their best of three set with the Bowman- ville A's. After losing the series opener 4-3, the Dunedins came back to win the second, game 22-4 in Whitby and set up the crucial deciding game at Bowmanville Soper Creek Park. The Dunedins put together the perfect combination of tight defense, effective hitting and top-line pitching in what was probably their best showing of the year in league play. Their performance ranked with their play in the Whitby-Oshawa tournament in July, one of the few occasions on which they per- formed up to their potential. Behind the plate, Doug Shearer came through with a steady game, the infield play- ed errorless baseball and the outfield, although not called on to do very much, was equal to the task. John Heffer at third and Jody Turner at short came up with especially fine games, while Mike Sorichetti in centre made a diving catch to· end the seventh inning, one of the defensive highlights for the Dunedins. The Whitby club jumped on Bowmanville right-hander Rick Bain for 10 hits, but the vital thing about the Dune- dins hitting was that their blows were tinely and run producing. John Heffer and Cam Murkar each hiad a pair of singles, Doug Shearer had a double, whilePaul Clugston, Jody Turner, Mike Sorichetti, Mark Tutton and Kirk Roberts added singles. Cam Murkar was giving the pitching chore and responded by handcuffing the A's, scat- tering five hits, all singles, striking out 14 and not allow- ing a Bowmanville runnerpast second base. The regular schedule was a disaster for the Whitby Legionaires, local peewee representativesiin the E.O.B.A. as they failed to come up with a single win during the season, often absorbing some lop-sided beatings. To the credit of the boys and their coaches, Vic Bergevin and Don Kennedy, tIaey hung in and, although they dropp- ed a close 8-7 decision to the Bowmanlville ,Leglonaires in the opening game of the best playoffs of five series, they came back in the second game to square it up with a resounding 13-3 win, their first victory of the season and having felt the thrill of winning they went out again in the third game and shut-out the Bowman- ville club 7-0. Russ Jubenville was the winner in the 13-3 win, striking out six and yielding only two hits. Sharing the hero's crown in this game wit'h Jubenville was Mike Lawrie who came up with a grand slam home run, account- ing for four of the 10 runs the Whitby club scored in the run- away fifth when they put the game away. Walks were the big factor in this game, the Whitby club getting 1 1 free bases, which, along with a double by Real Bergevin and a single by Mark Kennedy to go along with Lawrie's big blow, gave the home club its 13 runs. Whitby chalked up the 7-0 shutout behind the brilliant pitching chore of Russ Jubenville who threw a no hitter and a single, a walk, given up in the second inning, prevented the young Whitby pitcher from achieving the dream performance of every pitcher, a perfect game. The Whitby club gave Jubenville some lusty batting support to go along with his standout performance. Mike Lawrie led the club with three singles, Russ Jubenville helped his own cause with a pair of singles, with Real Bergevin, Mark Kennedy and Glen Campbell adding timely singles. The Whitby ,team, inspired by the flawless hurling of its pitcher, came through with an errorless game behind him to ensure the victory. Fourth game of the series was scheduled for Bowman- ville last night. The Whitby and Bowman- ville clubs were placed in the D category by the E.O.B.A. Classifications Committee which decides the series in which the club entered in the O.B.A. playoff set-up should the club represent the E.O.B.A. in the Ontario championships, and since Whitby and Bowmanville were the only two clubs in the D category they play off for the E.O.B.A. -) tit!e and this current series is therefore a three out of five set. The K of C Tykes were knocked out of further con- tention, dropping a pair of games to Belleville, while the Whitby Bantam club is the victim of some unwieldy scheduling which has seen them standing idly by for nearly two weeks awaiting a winner in a Kingston-Peter- borough se ries. The E.O.B.A. Ban tam finals have to be concluded by Aug. 24 so the final series into which Whitby won a bye will have to be played this weekend. two home runs, driving in five runs. The other hitters for Whitby were Darlene Gallas and Susan Kornic. Sue Beelby was the big hitter for Stouffville with a triple and single. Puckrins jumped off to a 2-0 first inning lead, increased the margin to 7-0 with five runs in the second. Stouffville got on the score- board with three unearned runs in the fifth. The Puckrins scored two in the fifth to increase the lead to 9-3. Stouffville scored three more in the top of the sixth on four hits. Pitcher Marion Verkuyl leads the team at bat with a .548 average, followed by Cathy Allin's .524. Cathy is the leader in the home run department, having belted 14 four-baggers. In the Whitby Girls Athletic Association Sweet Pea Division, Western Oil is in first place with 21 points on 10 wins and one tie. Whitby Welding follows with 13 points. Stu Jenkins Sports Centre leads the Cinderella Division with 30 points on 15 wins and two losses.
