44., WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1976, PAGE 9 Bantams fa/l by the wayside Dunedins and Legionaires advance to provincial playoffs Playoff baseball action this week saw two E.O.B.A. titles come to Whitby as the Dunedins earned the right to represent Eastern Ontario in provincial Midget C playoffs while the Legionaires will carry the Eastern Ontario flag into Peewee D competition. The Whitby Bantams fell by the wayside at the hands of Peterborough in their bid for the Eastern Ontario Bantam B crown. The Whitby Legionaires brought the Eastern Ontario Peewee D title to Whitby when they edged Bowmanville 4-3 in the fifth and deciding game of the five game set. For the Whitby club the victory was sweet, bringing to a happy conclusion what had been a disastrous season. During the regular schedule the Legionaires had failed to win a single game, lost the opener of the playoff series, won a pair to take a 2-1 lead and then lost the fourth game 13-8 to force the series to the limit. In the fourth contest, a losing cause, the highlight of the game was a two home-run performance by Real Bergevin, each of his blows coming with nobody aboard. Russ Jubenville. tossed a five-hitter but was charged with the loss, while his mates collected 10 hits off the Bowmanville pitching corps. Jubenville had two singles as did Alex Lawrie, while Mike Lawrie Mark Kennedy, Glen Williams and Rob Dyment each had singles to round out the offence topped by Bergevin's big night at the plate. In the fifth game Russ Jubenville again was on the mound for the Legionaires and held Bowmanville to five hits. Jeff Westenhoefer carne through with a double and a single, AlexLawrie had pair of singles an output- matched by Mark Kennedy, while Russ Jubenville and Glen Williams added singles. Whitby now represents Eastern Ontario in the Ontario Baseball Association Peewee D Championships. ' The provincial champions are decided in art All-Ontario Peewee Tournament which will be held þrobably on the Labour Day Weekend. The '76 edition of the Legionaires is the first Whitby Peewee representative in the Ontario'Championships since 1972 when Whitby had three clubs in O.B.A. playdowns. In Bantam action Whitby got off to a good start with a 4-3 decision over Peterboro. The pitching duo of Rick Dunphy and Larry Chizen yielded five hits and struck out seven. Gary She.arer led the Whitby hitters with a pair of singles,-Steve Parrott, Rick Dunphy, Greg Rich each had one single, with Larry Chizen getting Whitby's only extra base blow, a triple. In the field the Whitby club was not sharp, committing six miscues, a bad performance for the club which has had fairly steady fielding through- out the season and it may have been the early signs of the disaster to befall the club in Peterborough two nights later when their errors ran into double figures. - Having lost the coin toss, the second and third games of the series were played at Peterboro's Riverside Park. Whitby came up with an off night giving away runs in bunches, losing 18-4. The 'Petes jumped on the Whitby pitching of Larry Chizen and Greg Mclsaac for 18 hits. Mcîsaac, who was not a regular on the nound staff, was pressed into action when the game appeared to be going out of sight in an attempt to save some pitching for the next game. Larry Chizen led the club at the plate with a triple and two singles, Greg Rici and Rick Dunphy each had a pair of singles, Steve Parrott and Paul Heffer added singles. The final gaie, also at Riverside,.turned out to be a disaster for the Whitby club as they absorbed a 20-0 drubbing. The Whitby pitching staff was pounded for 22 hits. Rick Dunphy started but was relieved in the third by Mike Welling and Larry Chizen came on in the sixth. Murray McCorkell and Larry Chizen each had a pair of singles, with Greg Puchalsik and Rick Dunphy piçking up singles. It was rather a quick and surprising end for the Whitby club who had a record of 12 wins, three Josses and one tie to lead the league during the regular season. It had to be a disappointment to AI Mac- Donald, Jack McCorkell, Bill Puchalski and Jim Hare to bow out, however, the club, players and coaches alike can look back on a good season which started slowly but turned out to be a good year until playoff time. The Whitby Dunedins ousted Bowmanville in the semi-finals and then went the three-game limit to edge Port-Hope in the finals and bring the E.O.B.A. Midget C title to Whitby. The series was best described as loose, with none of the three games giving true baseball fans nuch to be e::cited about. The first game ended in a 11-4 victory for the Dunedins, the second game gave the Port Hope fans a lot to cheer about while the final game at Fairman on Sunday was a big improve- ment over the first two encoutnters. In the series opener played in Whitby, the Dunedins triumped with Cam Murkar picking up the win in the free wheelini 11-4 contest where the Dunedins were really not sharp, giving away two of the four runs chalked up by Port Hope. The scene shifted to Port Hope the next night for game two. The Dunedins, with -Murkar again on the mound, started off as if they were going to romp to another lop-sided triumph, running up an 8-2 lead by the end of the second inning. John Heaslip came on in the third and, with the Dunedins in front 12-2 at the end of the fifth it looked as if victory was assured. But in baseball nothing is ever in the bag until the last man is out, a bitter lesson the Whitby club learned the hard way before thé night was over. Heaslip suddenly lost his control and the rest of the club completely folded. In an almost unbelieveable display, the Dunedins came up with 10 errors in the last three innings as the Port Hope club suddenly got back in the game on the strength of the Whitby collapse. In the bottom of the ninth, the Dunedins still had a two-run edge but Port Hope scored three runs on Whitby errors to take the game with an unbelievable finish, 16-15. Murkar, who had comeback to pitch, was charged with the loss. The series final was played at Fairman and the Dunedins redeemed themselves with a much more respectable display as they shutout Port Hope 6-0 behind a strong three-hit pitching effort by John Heaslip, who came through with a fine performance all the way to get the win. His mates gave him a five-run cushion to work with and, although le yielded seven walks, le came up withseveral key strikeouts when they were needed. John Parrott with a single and double, Paul Clugston with three singles, Jody Turner, Mark Tutton and John Heaslip each with a single made up the Whitby offence. The last Whitby club in O.B.A. Midget play was in 1972 and they were stopped by the pitching of Lariy Landreth of Stratford, who gave the Whitby club one hit while striking out 25. Landreth is now with Denver of the AAA American Association and looks like le could be the first Canadian to make it to the majors through the Expo. farrn system, in another season or two. Curfew haits game, Puckrins win 14-6 The Novice Whitby Puckrins trounced Uxbridge 14-6 in a recent Lakeshore League girls baseball game called after five innings because of an eight o'clock park curfew. Pitcher Marion Verkuyl went the distance, recording her 18th win of the year. ·She allowed two hits and struck out 11 batters, bring- ing her season strikeout total to 310. Cathy Allin led the offence with three hits including a home run. Tricia Claspell and Susan Kornic also belted homers. Marion Verkuyl and Paula Gaudet each had two hits while Susan Bissell, Darlene Gallas and Joanne Gallagher each had one hit. Stu Jenkins led the Cinderella Division with 30 points on 15 wins and three losses. Hooker Chev Olds trails with 28 points.
