Free Press Photo for the Communion For the past two weeks, 29 girls from the Toronto Diocese of the Anglican Church of Canada have been learning the elements of singing for Communion services, at the Ontario Ladies' College. For the second year in succession, the college is acting a, host to the Toronto Diocesan Girls' Choir School which is made up of girls aged eight to 15from Oshawa, Whitby, Toronto, Orillia, Brampton, West Hill, Willow- dale, Scarborough, and Etobicoke. All the girls are members of choirs in their own churches, and will return home with a greater know- ledge of music for the Communion service, which is the central element of worship in the Anglican Church. The director of the Choir School is Aubrey Foy, organist and master of the choristers at St. James Cathedral in Toronto; assisted by John Tuttle, organist and choir master of St. Paul's Anglican Church on Bloor Street; and Anthony Brown- ing, counter-tenor at St. James Cathedral, who used to sing at Yorkminster in England. The school also has a chaplain for religious training, Brother Nicholas OHC. The choir school opened on Aug. 8, and concluded on Sunday, with the members of the school participating in a service at St. James Cathedral. The previous Sunday they sang at All Saints' Anglican Church in Whitby. Last Thursday the members of the school participated in a Choral Eucharist in the college chapel, celebrated by the Lord Bishop of Toronto, service Lewis Garnsworthy. A number of Whitby residents and clergy from the Diocese of Toronto attended. The daily program of the choir school consists of music practice, sports, and evening activities such as movies. "The aim of the choir school is to try and raise the level of church music in the Diocese of Toronto and give additional opportunities for music education", said Mr. Foy. Singing and piano lessons are offered at the school, and the students- participated in five Communion services, two of which were held outside the school. Mr. Foy hopes the choir schoolwill teach the girls how to use their musical talents in a professional way, and give them insight into what they should be doing in the way of church music. The enrolment in the Toronto Diocesan choir school has increased by 50 per cent in the two years since it began, says Mr. Foy, and he expects it to grow in the future.
