The Toronto native, whô lias lived in Whitby for 16 of his 17 years, lias been racing competitively since 1974 and lias plenty of experience under his beit. It ail began when Ken saw a sign in, a sporting goods store. advertising a qualifying race fo r . the 1974 Ontario Sumnier Games. He entered the race and per- formed well enough to qualify. At the '74 Gaines, Ken both surprised and disap- pointed hinself. 'In the 10-mile turne trail for, riders under 16, he finished sixth out of 35 comipetitors, breaking the domination of Sudb,ïry cyclists. In the 25-mile road race, he crashed with three miles to go. By that time, Ken had already joined the Durham Nomads Cycling Club, based in Oshawa. [le is still a member. Between then and now, Ken estimates that he has been in approximately 40 races. Two of his most memorable are the 1975 and 1976 County Town Carnival races which attract somne of the country's best cyclists. In the '75 version, %-e won the Dunlop Trophy as the top Whitby rider, while,'-i n this year's event, he finished second in the 16 to 18 year- old category. In addition to the several races Ken has been in, he puts in a great -many hours of practice. During the summer months, he rides about 225 miles in 16 hours spread over three days a week. With the extra practice turne, Ken just rnay be ready for the 1980 Olytupics. "The Olympics in 1l'980 are too far aicad for me to look at because in four years lots of things can happen", he says. I might rîse to be Canada's top cyclist or 1 might just drop out of racing altoge ther". Yes,- four years are a long way off and, for now, Ken's sites are set on the Ontario Summer- Gaines this weekend in the Ottawa-Carleton Region._ "My chances at the Ontario Summer Gaines will be good because one race, the 25-mile time trial, is a race 1 specialize in", says Ken. The o Ken. "4The other races (50-mile criteriurn and 60- mile road race) 1 should be good in too". And, as if the pressure of competition isn't enough, Ken also has to worry about his gear - a $900 hand-made 1l0-speed bike, $200 in spare wheels and $ 100 in clothing and protective equipment.
