Whitby took the opener EDITOR'S NOTE: Following is a story written i b>' the coach of a local soccer team after his team pulled off an upset victory 1 over a more powerful squad. It shows the satisfaction and pride which people can feel with the attainrnent of a seemingi/-difficuit goal. by JOE FRENDO-CUMBO JR. t was Wednesday, Sept.i 15, at 8 p.m. The Canada/ Czech gamne was to be played before 18,000 fans at the Montreal Forum. Well you know the story . The Canadians were favorites and only needed a victory to clinch the famned Canada Cup. The Czechs (underdogs) fought hard but lost 5-4 to to Teamn Canada in overtime. Let me tell you of somne other underdogs who be- came victorious. t was the saine date, at the saine time (8 p.m.), maybe not as important but to a group of 14 soccer players it wvas to bc the highliglit of their 1976 season. l'm speaking of a show- down played at Peel St. Park in Whitby between two soccer teamis, the Whitby Bantani Al-Stars (Ferrco Engineering). and the BantarnHouse League (Ewing Pools Brookiin). 1 coach the uinderdogs (Ewing Pools) and l'iin my second year.1 My tearn arrived on the field at 7:.30 p.mn. to %varm up for one of the biggcst games we viere to play. We felt tlùs game was of great importance, if %ve were victorious, because we were the underdogs, because we had pude and because we were against a very confident and heavy favourite teani. We were ready physically and mentally, but had to bear the idea of being expected to lose badly, and having to ignore the mockery comning fromn the opposing' tearn. 4-3 on goals by Paul Hoog- kamp, Rob Longmuir, Mike Devine and Wayne Missel- brook, Rangers won the second contest 5-2 on two goals each by Gerry Winkel and Paul Hoogkamp and a single by The guys (Ewing Pools) got in there and gavé 1 10%. After the Ail-stars took a 1 -0 lead we didn't let up and produced 2 goals scored by Bob Roche and Randy Jeffrey to win the game 2-1 - Our goalkeeper (Fred Frendo- Cumbo) made several acroba tic saves. SWe were the victors. The score showed that, but we also won our pride, our con- fidence, -our spirit and our close friendship as a team. Let me say that 1 have neyer enjoyed more coaching a bunch of guys who made what's supposed to be play- ing soccer for fun into play- ing to learn, to learn the joy of team spirit, the joy of winning, the pride to lese, and the stamiina to work CORPORATION 0F THE TOWN 0F WHITBY NOTICE TO RESIDENTS 0F THE TOWN 0F WHITBY The Council of the Town of Whitby cordially extends to ail residents of the Town, of Whitby an invitation to attend the Officiai Opening Ceremonies of the Town of Vhitby Operations Centre to take place at 4:00 p.ni. on Friday, September 24th, 1976. In a similar series in the bantami division, Whitby Ferrco Engineering won 15-2 over Ajax- In the first gaine, Jirnmny Rossler recorded a shutout as Whitby blanked Ajax 7-0 on their tales off for their coach who is behind them, en- courages them, and is their friend on and off the field. I feel thîs game also proved something else. The Whitby Minor Soccer Associ- ation took great pride and time in their Ail-star teams. But they neglected our house league teamns so rnuch as to make us feel unimportant. This victory made us imotant, not because we dfaed an AlI-star team, but because we were labelled as "ordinary guys". Now 1 hope we proved to be athletes, oniy because we had the Ruts to gzo against heavily favored compe tition and tryed our best to win (flot the gaine) but the narne "Athietes" Let mie congratulate the PORT PERRY SNOWMOBILE CLUB SNU,-.V SHOW '77 ANN UAL FALL SNOW SHOW Port Perry Arena Friday, September 24th' Saturday, Septemnber 25th Sunday, Septoember 26th The Port Perry Snowmobile Club invites the public to view the latest in snowmobiles, motorcycles, accessories & fashions.
