60 vears of happiness for the Clarkes September 15 was a big day for George and Minnie Clarke. On that day, 60 years ago they tied the nuptial knot in Lindsay, Ontario. George and Minnie, now 86 and 85 respectively, then moved around the province before winding up in Whitby 13 years ago. The Clarkes now live at 409 Centre Street South, an Ontario Housing Corporation apartnent building for senior citizens. Since living in Whitby, they have riade many new friends, several of whom sent cards on the occasion of the Clarkes' 60th. Cards from descendents wer alo i eidece.Th were also in evidence. The Clarkes have three children - all daughters and all married - nine or 10 grand- children and eight or nine great grandchildren, accord- ing to Minnie. "I'm proud of them all", she says. The Clarkes also received a bouquet of flowers and a letter from Mayor Jim Gartshore which reads: "It is a real pleasure to extend to you the warmest greetings and congratulations of the nernbers of council and the citizens of Whitby, on the occasion of your 60th wedding anniversary. We h pe that your anniversary day will be a menorable one for you and that you will spend it among good friends. We pray among good friends. We pray that you will be blessed with many more years of happiness together, and that you will enjoy these years in good heaIth". When asked the secret formula for such a successful marriage, the Clarkes agreed that the biggest factor is, sharing. They share the work. Minnie does most of the housework and George does the laundry weekly and sets the table nightly for breakfast the following day. In exchange,Minnie, a non- smoker and non-drinker, puts up with George's pipe and what he describes as "an odd little shot once in a. while". They also share the ins and outs of marriage. "We all have our little ups and downs. He never has killed me", says Minnie. "Every- body has their ups and downs. You have to blow off steam somehow",says George. But, the ups seem to out- number the downs. When asked if he and Minnie have enjoyed their 60 years together, George replies ",Il say so". The ceremony took place at 2 p.m. *at D. J. Base Communications, a new citizen band radio equipment centre in Oshawa. Citizen band radios are the làtest fad sweeping the nation, and in the case of Whitby taxi driver Bob Kelso, and another Whitby resident Pat Cloughton the radio proved to be a matchmaker. Mr. Kelso, who goes- by the code name of Buffalo Bob, and Miss Cloughton, who is known in CB language as Rose Petal, got to know each other by broadcasting on their CB radios. Having been brought together by citizen band radio, the couple decided to broadcast their wedding live over CB channel 22, which has a 50-mile radius. -The minister who officiat- ed at the ceremony is another CB'er called Bird Dog, but better known as Rev. William Wyrick of the First Whitby Baptist Church. The wedding is believed to be the first in Canada ever conducted over a citizen band radio. Mr. and Mrs. Kelso understand that one other CB wedding was held recently in ihe United States. FREE PRESS R 22, 1976, WHITBY 'I.
