WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, Noise barriers should be bujlt along h An Ontario Cabinet sub- mission on noise barriers is in its final draft and will soon be presented to the Cabinet by James Snow, Minister of Transportation and Commun- ications. In response to questions from Durham West MPP Dr. Charles Godfrey about pro- viding noise barriers on the portion of Highway 401 be- tween Pickering and Whitby, now under construction, Mr. Snow said last week that the area has been reviewed to establish areas where noise barriers may be required, should the Cabinet decision be favorable. As well, public meetings have been held with local interest groups in the Vicinity ighway of the Church Street inter- change in Pickering and Harwood Avenue in Ajax, said Mr. Snow. As a follow-up to these mee tings, excess earth material from the reconstruction pro- gram will be mounded on the north side of the right-of- way in the vicinity of Chu rch Street and the entire recon- struction area will have an aesthetic planting program, particularly in areas where the right-of-way is too narrow for earth berns. No mention was made of public meetings in Whitby, but earth mounds have been constructed on the north side of Highway 401, east of the Henry Street bridge during the past few months. Annes St. bridge a long way off? It may take 15 to 20 years before a bridge is constructed over Highway 401 at Annes Street, says Whitby's public works dire ctor Dick Kuwaahara. In response to questions from Dr. Charles Godfrey MPP, Mr. Kuwahara reported to council recently that when the ministry of transportation and communications con- structs Highway 401 to its ultimate design, there will be interchanges constructed at the Whitby-Ajax town line, Blair Street and Thickson Road. The bridge was closed, a ministry official said, in order to resurface the pavement and waterproof the structure. The bridge was also checked for other necessary repairs, and new sidewalks constructed. The ministry official said the construction time was delayed somewhat by rainy weather.
