WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1976, PAGE 11 Recruidng drive is on Whitby Sea Cadets offer instructionin flying and seamanship By BRIAN WINTER Staff Writer There's plenty of activity this fall and winter at the Whitby Sea Cadet Corps, an organization open to boys and girls aged 12 to 18. The Sea Cadets, who have their headquarters at 300 Dunlop Street West, and train at King Street school, have an opportunity to learn seamanship, leadership, drill, rifle shooting, first aid, communication, navigation, physical training, sailing and flying. During October the Sea Cadets are passing out flyers door-to-door as they undr- take a major recruiting drive. The corps has 22 cadets and 12 new recruits, and the com- manding officer, Capt. Jim Vanderende, hopes to have 50 cadets in training by Christmas. The Whitby Sea Cadet Corps has formed h band and is looking for new members who want to parti- cipate in this activity. Any- one interested should call the headquarters at 668-7411 on Wednesday nights after 6:30 p.m. or Capt. Vanderende at 728-3774. So far the band has nine members. The bandmaster is Jan Askew, a former member of a sea cadet band. The band is available for parades, and Crpt. Vanderende hopes that .the community will make use of the opportunity offered. Sea Cadets are available to perform a number of other duties in the community, says Capt. Vanderende. They can participate in public functions as honor and color guards, or ushers, and can do such duties as car parking or odd jobs. The Whitby corps partici- pated in a church parade in Toronto October 17, with the Scarborough Sea Cadet Corps, and from November 4 to 6, Whitby cadets will be assisting the Whitby and Brooklin Legions with their poppy days. If called upon, they will supply an honor guard at the cenotaph on November I 1, says Capt. Vanderende. Besides performing public duties, the cadets will be undertaking a fund-raising drive until October 31 by selling Halloween candies door-to-door. In addition to basic training at King Street School and participating in public functions, the Sea Cadets have an opportunity to attend a number of special summer camp courses and even act as crew on Naval vessels. Last April, leading Cadet Richard Batemen took a month's cruise on the HMCS Anînapolis to Bermuda, under the auspices of the Depart- ment of National Defense. In July and August, Cadet Andy Brough served on the helicopter destroyer H-MCS Nipigon on a cruise to the Olympics, and had sorne unexpected adventures when the Nipigon was called out on a resuce mission when a Russian Military plane crashec at sea off Newfoundland. Since September 1, Cadet Brough and Cadet Andy Bums, both of Whitby, have joined the Canadian Forces as a result of the interesi they developed as Sea Cadets Four Whitby Sea Cadets attended Canadian Forces Base Quadra on Vancouver Island for two weeks in Juil for basic training, and two cadets took leadership courses at Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis in Nova Scotia for six weeks. One female cadet spent the summer at Camp Bordon, doing general administrative work, and another cadet took a scuba diving course at St. Catharines in the summer. One cadet spent two weeks in July touring California as part of a Canadian-American exchange program. Yet another cadet was a tour guide on the HMCS laida in June. Besides going to summer camps for training sessions, the cadets had special training sessions at Whitby. On June 18 and 19, a joint exercise with HMCS York was held at Whitby Harbor. Two 125-foot gate vessels came into the harbor for the weekend, and 24 Whitby cadets learned every operation of the ships, including steer- ing, engine room work and duty watch. Last year,Capt. Vanderende introduced flying instruction, and will begin his second year of this program in November. Capt. Vanderende can take up three cadets at a time in his four-seater Cessna 172, and Second Lieutenant C. Enns can take up one cadet at a time in his two-seater Cessna 150. Next spring Capt. Vanderende would like to have a breakfast flight for the cadets to Muskoka airport. During the summer of 1976, the Whitby Sea Cadet Whitby Sea Cadets band members Robert Enns, Andrew Vaiciunas and lain Buchanan practice up for forthcoming parades. The Whitby Sea Cadet Corps, now in its seventh year of operation, is carrying on a recruiting drive to bring the corps up to 50 cadets by Christmas. A successful venture in May this year was a citizen- ship tour for the cadets to Ottawa, where they attended a session of Parliament and toured Government- House and the Canadian Mint. Next year Capt. Vanderende wouldlike to take the cadets to Washington to see how the American government operates. The Whitby Sea Cadet Corps is well regarded by the Department of National Defense, which sent Capt.
