Free Press Photo 1350 L ISTEN TO LIE THE OSHAWA STATION Consumers Drive extension planned Construction will begin in the spring of 1977 to extend Consuniers Drive from Hopkins Street to Thickson Road, Mayor Jirn Gartshore announced Thursday. The construction of this road wvi11 open up about 100 acres of prime industrial land, said Mayor Gartshore, who hopes that the new road wvi1I put some stress on the pro- vincial'government to improve. the cloverleaf at Thickson Road and' Highway 401. Consumners Drive wilI extend from its present location at Hopkins Street to a point on Thickson Road, north of the, former Howard Johnson hotel site, and replace the existing Champlain Avenue between Hopkins Street and Thickson Road, said Mayor Gartshore. 1-e also pointed out that Champlain Avenue east- of Thickson Road will be realigned to join the new Consumers Drive extension. Construction is expected to be cornpleted by the end of 1977. Mayor Gartshore explained that no part of the cost for lte road will be borne by the town, for the provincial gommnrent will pay for the portion from Thickson Road to the Hydro right-of-way, and the developer of the lands east of Hopkins Street, ADN Associates, will pay for the remainder of the Con- sumners Drive extension. The road extension is the resuit of a co-operative effort by the Region of Durham, Town of Whitby, Province of Ontario, Constimers Gas, and Munns Press, said the mayor. As part of the arrange- ments, Consuiners Gas liad to give up some land (o nmake a proper road ahgnmnent, and Munns Press, opposite the existing Consumners Drive. traded a third of an acre of land with ADN Associates to make roorn for the right-of- way. On, Thursday, Mayor Gartsliore turned the sod for a 7,000 square foot extension to Munns Press, which will bring this company's total space to 10,000 square fèet.
