JOHN BUCHANAN Aline Currier: Flrst: 1 arn a mother concerned that my children and yours obtain the best education to prepare them for the road that lies ahead. Second: As a parent volunteer in my children's school, I feel there is a need for more parent involvement in education today as active participants in the decision making process. Mel Peit: My qualification for the position of trustee comes from that of an interest in education. 1 have this interest because 1 arn a parent, a taxpayer and a teacher. As a parent, 1 want tile best education possible f'or rny chiild. As a taxpayer, 1 want niy tax dollar used wisely. As a teacher, 1 have views on education whiclv miay be of use. Dave Sins: 1 would bring to the position as a Publie Schiool Trus tee mny experience as a lawyer, a former Executive Assistant to the ALINE CURRIER Federal Minister of Labour, a taxpayer and, above ail, as a parent of 3 children attend- ing the Public Systemn in Whitby. Jim Speers: (1) Resident in the Town of Whitby for over 20 years. (2) A sincere interest in the welfare of young people - father of 2 daughters and have 3 grand children residing in Durham Region. (3) Thirty- five years as teacher and administrator - The last 15 years Principal at Courtice Secondary School, Bowman- ville, Ont. - retired in June 1976 - 57 years of age and in good health. (4) Exper- ience with committee work - both in school and church & service club work. Frank Sugden: I have been interested in the public affairs of Whitby for many years. 1 was Chairman of the Whitby Citizens Study group, a member of thie Downtown t\ction Committee and was Beverly Bicknell: As a~ trustee on the DurhamnRegiofl Sehool Board, I would try to lower the financial burden of the local tax payer, by checking out each monetary demand thoroughly, so as to avoid purchasing expensive, littie used equipment, or building educational faiities which have only a temporary use. Also, I would try to stress the -i-ieed for better supervision in the use of the extremely costly teaching aids. Lt is appalling to see our tax dollars bèing wasted. needlessly. 1 feel tha t as long as the Durham Board of Education continues to employ dedi- cated and enthusiastic teachers, there won't be a problem with« fthê-1igFer Pupil Teacher Ratio (P.T.R.) here in Durham region. Finally, 1 would recom- mend to the Durham Board of Education, that they establish guidelines and minimum standards of dress and deportment for our teachers. The easy-going "buddy- buddy". atitude, the dressing and talking like the students,' detracts from school room e e OPERATION VOTE RemElect GERRY EMM to REGIONAL COUNCIL *Gerry Emm will continue to publmsh newsletters in the local papers to inform the citizens as to what is happening within the Town and Region. *As there are only twp (2) Regional Councillors representing Whitby plus the Mayor (a total of 3) Whitby needs strong experienced counicillors to voice restraint, question future projects and put Whitby's positions firmly before côuncil. *Emm fought te) have regional budget reduced from what would have been a thirty-tvvo per cent (32%> prediction down to thirteen per cent (13%). Emm fought against staff increases and made several motions to reduce unnecessary staff.
