Free Piress Photo TORONTO- Snowmo- bi le acciden ts, i njuries and dcaths for the 1975-76 scason wcrc the lowest in five ycars, Minister of Transportation and Com- munications James Snow said today. Comparcd to the 1974-75 season, there was a 5.1 per cent drop in the total numnber of collisions. "There has been a 28.6 per cent decrease in fatal snowmobile collisions," said Mr. Snow, "plus a 13.5 per cent decrease in personal injury collisions; a 31.6 per cent drop in the number of persons killed and 15 per cent fewer per- sons injured. "This is encouraging, and 1 hope it's indicative of the greater attention snowmobilers are giving to the safe operation of their machines." Mr. Snow reported that collisions involving pro- perty-damage-only rose 18.6 per cent, 'but he stressed that the increase was due mainly to a change in legislation that lowered reporting of pro- perty-damage-only colli- sions from $200 to $100. 0f aIl reported acci- dents, 415 (55 per cent) occurred on highways; 345 (45 per cent) off the highways. 486 (63.9 per. cent) of the accidents oc- curred on weekends. During the 75-76 sea- son, of the 760 snowmo- bile collisions, 25 were fa- tal, 467 caused personal injury, 268 involved pro- perty damage only. In the 415 on-highway accidents, 30 drivers were under 16 and driving i11e- gally. Fifty-two operators, 16 and over, did not have valid drivers licences. "While fatalities and injuries are lower, what we should be aiming for are no fatalities and no in- juries," said Mr. Snow. "And one big" step I see in cutting doWn the statistics even further is the estab- Iishing of snow vehicle op- erator' s courses by the Ontario Federation of Snowmnobile Clubs and the Ontario Safety League in conjunction with my Ministry. "They will train young people from the age of 121> as well as older learners without a driver's licence. Those interested in taking this course should get in touch with their local 0.F.S.C. snowmobile club now, or the Ontario Safety League. "This is the kind of ex- pert instruction we need right now if we're going to keep lowerîng snowmo- bile accident figures," the Minister said. Can't Hear One candidate running for reelection was giving a speech on a college campus. "Mr. Chairman," he corn- plained, 've been on my feet nearly ten minutes, bt there is so much' ribaldry and interruption, I can hardly hear myself speak." "It's alright," shouted a stu- dent from the rear, "lybu aln't missin' much." OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT THAPAR DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC Complete Denture Service 163 Simcoe St. S.
